Velars-sur-Ouche can be explored through two clearly distinct themes: the religious architectural history surrounding the Chapelle Notre-Dame d’Etang and the transport history of the Fin railway viaduct. Routes and modes of travel on a regional scale are another aspect. When deciding where to stay, two questions can help: are you primarily interested in sacred architecture and Marian tradition, or would you rather plan around a route and its mode of travel?

Marian tradition and architectural history

The pilgrimage associated with the Chapelle Notre-Dame d’Etang has been known since 1371. The present building was inaugurated in 1896, replacing a Gothic building while preserving its apse. The surviving apse is part of the Gothic predecessor, connecting the earlier building with the present one. The chapel has a polygonal floor plan and a dome. It also features an eight-metre-high statue of the Virgin and Child from the Tusey foundries. Including the monumental statue, the chapel has been listed as a historic monument by decree dated 22 January 1996. A polygonal floor plan has several corners.

Another trace leads to the Église paroissiale Saint-Blaise: since 1862, it has housed the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary found on the site of Notre-Dame-de-l’Etang. The chapel and the parish church thus offer different points of reference for local sacred history: the chapel through its architectural history and listed status, and Saint-Blaise through the statue that was found.

A different historical focus

The Fin railway viaduct adds transport history to the religious architectural history. Construction began in Velars-sur-Ouche in 1848 for the PLM railway line, and the viaduct was completed in 1851. These dates distinguish the start of construction from its completion. For those interested in the town’s history, it offers another subject alongside the chapel’s architecture: the story of a structure built for a railway line.

Routes and modes of travel

At regional level, the Route d’Artagnan passes through the Ouche et Montagne area. It can be explored there on horseback, by carriage, on foot or by bicycle. Choosing a mode of travel is therefore part of the planning: the same route offers four different ways to get around.

Nico Vélos is associated with electric bicycle rentals for the Voie Verte. The provider is located in Velars-sur-Ouche, 500 metres from the banks of the Canal de Bourgogne. Check current operating details before travelling. The connection here differs from that of the Route d’Artagnan: Nico Vélos offers electric bicycles for the Voie Verte, while four modes of travel are listed for the Route d’Artagnan.
