Saint-Aubin offers several distinct perspectives on winemaking and heritage: vines climb the slopes, while the combes open up wide panoramas. There is also a historic church, a fortified manor house in Gamay, and paths through vineyards, forests and rocks. If you are looking for a holiday rental, choosing a clear focus for your trip can make it easier to decide: wine, architectural history or exploring the landscape. This lets you shape your stay around the subject that interests you most.

Winemaking and terroir

The Saint-Aubin-Village appellation includes 30 Premiers Crus. At the Caveau de Saint-Aubin, visitors can learn about the area's soils and terroirs and taste wines from the local estates represented there. The Caveau is also a place to be introduced to the world of wine and exchange ideas. Tastings and terroirs therefore offer two different approaches: one through wines from the represented estates, the other through the soils and distinctive character of the area. Visitors can also discover cabottes as part of Burgundy's winemaking heritage. The vines climbing the slopes make this connection to the landscape visible.

Church and fortified manor house

The parish church of Saint-Aubin and the fortified manor house in Gamay offer an opportunity to compare very different periods of architecture. The eastern part of the parish church was probably built at the end of the 10th century; the bell tower and spire date from the 12th century. The time gap between the probably early-built section and the tower elements is a concrete indication of the church's gradual construction history. In Gamay, the fortified manor house displays features of a Burgundian fortified noble residence. The keep and possibly the residential wing were built in the 13th century. The residential wing appears to have been altered in the 15th century when a lower wing was added. At the end of the 19th century, the de Chauvigny de Blot family restored the house. The keep refers to the fortified tower; the residential wing is the part of the building intended for living in. The terms thus distinguish the defensive and residential functions of the manor house. The dates, meanwhile, place the construction and later alteration of individual parts of the complex in context.

Paths and landscape

Saint-Aubin lies on the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne. The area has walking and cycling paths between vineyards, forests and rocks. The “Collines de Maison Forte” circular trail passes vineyards in the Saint-Aubin Premier Cru appellation. If you plan to follow this route, check current trail conditions locally. The points of reference differ: the wine route places Saint-Aubin within a travel itinerary, while the circular trail offers a specific link to Premier Cru vineyards.
