Champagne-Sur-Vingeanne brings together several kinds of discovery: architectural history at Château d’Etrabonne and the Church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude, a French garden, and opportunities to get to know the landscape and nature along different routes. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you can first consider whether you would like to focus on architectural and art history, gardens and scenery, or encounters with animals. Details about the town offer specific points of reference.

Architectural history and protected art

Château d’Etrabonne is a building with four corner towers that was altered in the 19th century. The entire site has been listed as a historic monument by decree dated 27 December 2019. The site includes an extensive park bordering the Vingeanne. The dates refer to different events: the alteration of the building in the 19th century and the listing of the entire site in 2019.

The Church of Saint-Julien-de-Brioude contains monumental wall paintings entitled “Vierge des litanies et anges musiciens”. They were discovered in 1991 during work in the church and immediately restored afterwards. The same church houses the sculptural group “Le Calvaire”, which has been classified as a protected historic monument object since 22 July 1959.

Another figure in the Church of Saint-Julien is a statue, probably dating from the 15th century, of a young lord with a falcon on his hand. Its iconography suggests that it may represent either Saint Thibault or Saint Julien. The distinctions are important when considering the artworks: the statue’s century is only probable, and the figure depicted may be associated with either of two saints. The wall paintings, in turn, can be identified by their title and their discovery in 1991.

Explore the garden and landscape

The Jardin des Abeilles is a 2,500 m² French garden. Its features include boxwood and roses, a pond, an orchard and an apiary. The description goes beyond the planting: the pond, orchard and apiary also shape the character of this garden. The extensive park at the château and the Jardin des Abeilles offer different points of interest for those interested in green spaces and the landscape.

There are two differently described options for a route through the surrounding area. A marked, 9 km walking trail starts at the esplanade of the former Champagne-Sur-Vingeanne railway station. The Circuit de Jacky focuses on exploring the landscape via small paths and encountering nature. Thus, a distance is specified for the marked walking trail, while the Circuit is described in terms of landscape and encounters with nature. The starting point of the Vélorail de la Vingeanne is at Place de la Gare.

Activities with horses and donkeys

The Pat&Plumes educational farm offers equine-assisted mediation workshops and opportunities to meet horses and donkeys. This is a distinct focus alongside historic monuments, gardens and scenery: here, the emphasis is on the animals and the activities offered by Pat&Plumes.

When planning your stay, you can organize your interests accordingly. Those particularly interested in architecture and art will find specific points of interest at the château and the church; those who would rather focus on greenery and nature can consider the garden and the differently described routes. Encounters with horses and donkeys offer another way to shape your choices.
