Buffon combines industrial history with walks along the Canal de Bourgogne and routes for hikers and cyclists. The Grande Forge de Buffon is an 18th-century industrial heritage complex commissioned by the naturalist Comte de Buffon in 1768. The area also has a designated hiking route that starts and ends in Buffon, as well as a signposted towpath connecting the Grande Forge by bicycle to Montbard or the Yonne. This offers different ways to plan your stay, whether you want to focus on the Forge’s history and architecture, go hiking, or enjoy activities on the water.

The Grande Forge: Industrial History and Architecture

The Grande Forge is classified as a historic monument. Residential and service buildings combine with industrial buildings to form a unique architectural ensemble. This mix defines the character of the site: it comprises more than industrial buildings alone and includes a variety of uses and structural features.

The complex includes residential and operational buildings, including those of the former cement works, gardens, and a diversion channel with retaining walls. It also includes the remains of a bridge on the upper section of the canal, the washing area, also known as the “Patouillet,” and the remains of a Decauville railway. The dam on the Armançon, with its components and foundations, is also part of the complex. The ensemble thus spans buildings, water engineering, and traces of earlier infrastructure.

The site also includes a private landscaped garden, maintained as a kitchen garden. It is another part of this diverse complex, complementing the residential, service, and industrial buildings with a designed garden area.

For the “Rendez-vous aux jardins” event, short guided tours of an area of the Grande Forge that was to be opened exceptionally were scheduled for June 2026. The owners were to lead the tours. If you are planning to attend a future edition, check the event dates again.

Hiking, Walks, and Routes to the Forge

The designated “Entre canal et Armançon” hiking route is 17 kilometres long, starts and ends in Buffon, and is classed as easy. Its length and difficulty rating provide two specific points to consider when planning. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Canal de Bourgogne is a good option for walks. The Grande Forge is beside the canal, and boats can moor at the foot of the site. If you are planning to travel by water, check local navigation conditions.

The Grande Forge is also accessible by bicycle: a signposted towpath leads to the site from Montbard or the Yonne, with picnic areas along the way. Check local route conditions before planning your ride.

These options address different planning needs: the hiking route is described by a set distance and difficulty rating, while bicycle access and mooring by boat are the main ways to reach the Forge. Walks along the Canal de Bourgogne offer another option. You can choose whether to focus on the hike, the Grande Forge, or a walk by the water.
