Sixt-sur-Aff offers different focuses for planning a trip: walks and hikes outdoors, leisure facilities at the Site de la Roche, and architectural and local history. A specific 10-kilometre route, historic buildings, and local history activities each appeal to different interests. This lets you decide whether you would rather spend your time being active outdoors or exploring the history of particular places and buildings.

Walks, hiking, and the Site de la Roche

The Aff River forms part of the boundary of Sixt-sur-Aff. There are places to walk along its banks. One named hiking option is “Les hauts de Sixt”: the route is 10 kilometres long and is one of two 10-kilometre hiking trails to discover in the municipality. The stated distance makes this a clearly defined hike; walks along the Aff, by contrast, take the river as their point of reference. When choosing between the two, you can consider whether you prefer a hike of a set length or a walk along the riverbank.

The Site de la Roche has three ponds, a fitness trail, and a picnic area. This brings together bodies of water, an opportunity to exercise, and a place to take a break. The site therefore offers a different focus from the named hiking route and walks along the river: several leisure activities are explicitly part of the Roche. When planning, you can choose between a hike, a walk along the Aff, and a stay at a leisure area with ponds and a picnic area.

Getting there also deserves its own planning step: Sixt-sur-Aff is served by the RED network’s on-demand transport service. Check the current terms of this service before travelling.

Architectural history and local culture

The present-day Church of Saint-Sixt was built in 1881 to plans by the Nantes architect Liberge. Its stained-glass windows bear the signature “Meuret et Lemoine, Nantes” and are dated 1882–1883. The building and its fittings can therefore be distinguished chronologically: the church was built first, followed by the dating of its windows in the two years that followed. For architecture enthusiasts, this offers a concrete glimpse into the church’s building and furnishing history.

The Manoir de la Cour de Sixt is one of the municipality’s outstanding examples of architectural heritage. It houses a fireplace dating from 1572, which is 3 metres wide and 4 metres high. These two measurements give a clear sense of the historic feature’s scale: its height exceeds its width by one metre. Château de Bézyl was originally built in the Palladian style in 1870—eleven years before the present-day Church of Saint-Sixt was built. Inside the château are colourful frescoes depicting rural scenes and windows decorated with stained glass. Access is subject to reservation.

The Moulin à eau de Sixt also connects the present-day local landscape with its former use. The mill served as a grain mill and a fulling mill. Today it is completely in ruins; only the water reservoir and the adjacent sluice remain visible. The surviving features are clearly distinct from the site’s former function: what can be seen are the reservoir and sluice, not the mill as a working building.

Local everyday history is explored through the walks “La traversée du Bourg” and “Moments d’histoire”. A different, more playful approach is offered by the cultural interactive mystery game “Sixt et le convoi fantôme”, which is based on puzzles, logical thinking, and deduction. Availability may vary; check the current offering if you would like to include the game in your plans.
