On the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance, Saint-Domineuc brings together historic canal structures and opportunities for paddling trips and walks. The Ecluse de Couëdan is one of the canal’s 48 locks; on its calm waters, the Base Nautique de Bretagne romantique offers canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding year-round. There are also routes with clearly differing stated lengths. This gives you a choice of distinct themes for planning your trip: canal history by the water, activities on the canal and walking routes.

Locks, a bridge and a manor house

The Ecluse de Couëdan was built in the first quarter of the 19th century and is one of the 48 locks on the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance. The Maison éclusière n°38 in Couadan was also built in the first quarter of the 19th century; it follows the standard design for lock keepers’ houses along the canal. Comparing the two brings the early canal architecture to life: the lock and the standardised house represent different building functions.

The Pont de Linon is a granite and concrete bridge over the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance. It was built in 1827 and reconstructed with concrete in the mid-20th century. Alongside the construction dates of the lock and lock keeper’s house, it offers a way to trace the later alteration of a bridge.

The private Manoir de La Ramée is a 17th-century manor house situated between the Calaudry and Couëdan locks. Together, these structures show a clear chronology: the manor house dates from the 17th century, while the lock, lock keeper’s house and bridge date from the 19th century. The history of the Pont de Linon extends into the mid-20th century, when it was reconstructed with concrete. This makes it possible to compare structures from several eras in Saint-Domineuc.

Paddling on the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance

The Base Nautique de Bretagne romantique offers canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the calm waters of the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance throughout the year. No technical skills are required for these outings. These three activities are specific ways to experience the canal from the water, each involving a different form of paddling.

The base provides paddles, life jackets and waterproof containers, as well as changing rooms and sanitary facilities. As offerings and facilities may change, briefly check the current conditions before your visit.

Walking paths and route lengths

For walks and leisurely strolls, the towpath of the Bretagne-Romantique loop route Circuit du Canal No. 16 is developed as a Greenway. This means Saint-Domineuc also offers an option specifically intended for walking.

The stated distances make it possible to compare the length of three other routes: Les Terrasses du Canal is 3.7 km long, the Circuit de Calaudry is 8.5 km, and the Circuit de La Bouhourdais is 14.3 km. Calaudry falls between the shortest and longest distances; the difference between the two extremes is 10.6 km. If you want to choose by route length first, the comparison shows a clear progression from shorter to longer.
