Discover Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier through its varied historical and natural features: alongside the town’s history, there are churches, a medieval-inspired garden and paths around the Étang. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus mainly on architectural history, the château or nature.

The Château and photographic perspectives

The remains of the Château de Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier were classified as a Monument historique in February 2026. The restored château reopened to visitors on 1 July 2026. An educational discovery trail at the château explores the site’s history and natural diversity; it was created as part of the restoration work in 2026. As the reopening falls on a specific date, it is worth checking the latest visitor information when planning your visit.

The Parcours photo 800 ans offers another perspective on the town: throughout the year, it displays photographic panels at four locations in Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier. This lets you include a photographic experience in your exploration, alongside the architectural heritage.

Town history and architecture

Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier was given a fortified town wall in the 14th century. A later period in the town’s history is reflected in today’s Église paroissiale Saint-Aubin: it was rebuilt between 1899 and 1902 to plans by Henri Mellet. The building is in the Romanesque-Byzantine style and was blessed on 21 December 1902. The dates place the 14th-century fortifications in a different historical context from the church’s reconstruction around 1900.

The Chapelle Saint-Denis also has its own artistic connection: its stained-glass windows were created in 1894 by the Lecomte et Colin workshop from Rennes. In the Bois d’Uzel, the “Mémorial aux Bretons” stele commemorates a battle. The churches, stained glass and memorials add different forms of religious art and remembrance to the town’s history.

Garden, park and Étang

The Jardin Médiéval was created on the site of a former vegetable garden, which was transformed into a medieval-inspired garden. It features local plant species that were once used for medicinal, culinary or decorative purposes. The selection of plants may change. The garden thus connects a specific place with the plants’ former uses, which should not be understood as their present-day purposes.

The Parc du château is part of an area designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible. A service tree in the park is considered rare in the Ille-et-Vilaine département. At the Étang de Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier, you can follow the paths around the water on foot or by bicycle. These options bring a nature focus to your travel plans, distinct from the emphasis on architectural and town history: the park is part of a designated natural area, while the Étang offers a route to explore on foot or by bicycle.

When choosing accommodation, you can first consider what interests you most: historic buildings and the history of the château on one hand, or the garden, park and paths around the Étang on the other. Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier offers various ways to shape your stay; which ones you prioritize depends on what you would like to discover while you are there.
