Retiers reveals itself through its trails, landscapes and history: the La Croix Verte circular trail runs through the countryside around the commune, crossing open farmland, a sunken lane and architectural heritage. Other routes offer their own highlights, such as views from the heights or woodland and river landscapes. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth choosing not just by route, but also by length, difficulty and preferred way of getting around.

Walking trails with a range of route profiles

La Croix Verte is an easy, 9.5 km walking trail starting in Retiers. It loops around the commune; along the way, you can discover open farmland, a sunken lane and architectural heritage. At 24 km, the Chêne de la liberté circular trail is considerably longer and is a moderate route suitable for walking or mountain biking. It runs through the Retiers countryside between the forests of Le Theil-de-Bretagne and La Guerche-de-Bretagne. The trail follows the Ardenne river and crosses it several times, bringing changes in the landscape. Check local conditions before setting out.

The trails also differ in theme. The Circuit Pierre de Richebourg links historical periods from the Neolithic to the French Revolution with varied scenery of sunken lanes and woodland edges. CrĂŞtes et vallons focuses on viewpoints: from the heights, you can look out over Retiers, the forest of Theil-de-Bretagne and the surrounding countryside. The two routes therefore differ both in their historical associations and in how they showcase the landscape.

History in buildings and trails

The Saint-Pierre parish church in Retiers offers a glimpse into the town’s architectural history: the nave, choir and transept were built in several phases during the 17th century. The Chêne de la Liberté commemorates the gathering of 3,000 National Guardsmen from the districts of Retiers and La Guerche on 27 June 1790, when they affirmed their federation. The Chemin des Saulniers is a still-recognisable ancient route used to transport salt from Guérande into France. The timeline thus spans ancient salt transport, the church’s construction phases and the 1790 gathering.
