Parigné combines a remarkable raised bog with churches, manor houses and a range of activities. When planning your trip, the first question is therefore what you want to focus on: nature and wildlife watching, architectural history, or golf and fishing? Each of these themes gives your stay a distinct focus.
Moorland and wildlife watching
The Tourbière de Landemarais is a 26-hectare natural area that is protected and managed by the département. It is classified as a bog of national interest and is one of only three raised bogs in Brittany. This makes a distinctive bog landscape the main attraction, rather than just a green setting for other excursions.
A discovery trail features information panels. A viewing point offers opportunities to observe wildlife and birds. If wildlife watching is important to you, these features give you a concrete basis for choosing the focus of your outing. No information is provided about the trail length or walking time, so plan your visit according to your own preferences.
Churches and their architectural details
The Église Notre-Dame is open to the public. Its vault is blue and ochre, and three pairs of beam ornaments are carved in the shape of crocodiles. The nave appears to date from the 14th century, while the south portal dates from the 15th century. This means you can encounter different periods in a single building, one of which is explicitly described as probable.
The cemetery of the Église Notre-Dame also preserves several tombstones. These include the tombstone of René de Gaulay, Seigneur du Bois Guy, which depicts a sword and a cross. A covered heraldic cross adds to these notable stone monuments. These features differ from the architecture inside the church: tombstones and a cross take centre stage here, while the vault and carved beams are the focus inside.
The Chapelle Saint-Roch has well-preserved wood panelling from the time of Louis XIV, as well as an old stone statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue was found in the foundations of the choir of the Église Notre-Dame. This establishes a specific historical connection between the two church sites: the statue was found in the choir of Notre-Dame and is now in the Chapelle Saint-Roch.
Manor houses and architectural history
At the Manoir des Acres, an outbuilding that was remodelled in the 18th century has been preserved. Its features include a pointed-arch portal, a coat of arms in the tympanum and a polygonal tower that is missing its top. The coat of arms in the panel above the portal and the unusual shape of the tower offer different architectural points of interest from those found in the religious buildings.
After the original manor house disappeared, the Manoir des Acres became the seat of the Seigneurie de Parigné. This historical role adds to the story of the surviving outbuilding: the site is associated both with a specific building and with a change in its significance within the history of the seigneurie.
The Manoir de la Tandrais was rebuilt under the name Château de la Villegontier. The chapel of the Manoir de la Tandrais is built of large ashlar blocks. Above its round-arched portal is a pointed-arch window with a mullion. The contrast between the round arch and the pointed arch makes the chapel’s different forms easy to describe without confusing them with the details of the Manoir des Acres.
Golf and fishing as other activities
Since October 2018, the Golf du Bois-Guy has had a 9-hole course. From there, you can look out over the landscape around the Château. Golf therefore offers a different perspective from the historic buildings or the discovery trail: here, the landscape around the Château is specifically part of the view from the course.
Angling for roach, carp, perch and trout takes place at the Étang des Quatre Vents. If you want to fish there, check the current fishing permit requirements in advance, as they can change. Nature watching, architectural history, golf and fishing are different interests that you can use to plan your stay in Parigné.
Choosing the focus of your stay
When looking for a hotel in Parigné, you can start by thinking about what matters to you on your trip. Landemarais and the viewing point give the nature theme a specific focus; the churches and manor houses offer architectural history with a variety of details. Golf and fishing add further options as activities in their own right.
