Le Châtellier offers several ways to enjoy a stay: its botanical park and walking routes, distinctive landscape features, and a local history visible in the village’s original layout and its church. When choosing a route, it is important to consider the specific conditions: the park routes are signposted, while access to Pierre-qui-Fume involves a steep, slippery turnoff.

Gardens and walking routes

Parc Botanique de Haute Bretagne is located in Le Châtellier. The botanical and floral park covers 25 hectares and features 24 contemporary themed gardens. Two walking routes offer a clear choice of length: they are 1 kilometre and 1.5 kilometres long, and are freely accessible and signposted. This lets you choose between the shorter and longer route, rather than treating the park paths as a single circuit.

The park also offers fun activities for all ages, including children and teenagers. This gives you options beyond the themed gardens. If you are planning a visit, you can take these different aspects of the park into account without committing to a fixed order for your stay.

Le Casse-Graines is located at the entrance to Parc Botanique de Haute Bretagne. The restaurant serves cuisine based on fresh, local and organic produce. If you plan to eat there, check the latest service information before travelling, as restaurant details can change.

Landscape and trail conditions

Pré-Moraine is also known as Cirque du Diable and takes the form of a deep, enclosed hollow. Access is an important consideration at Pierre-qui-Fume: you reach it via a steep and slippery turnoff in Bois-du-Diable. Take this trail condition into account if you want to include the detour in your route.

The two landscape destinations offer different points of reference: at Pré-Moraine, the shape of the hollow is the main feature; at Pierre-qui-Fume, the condition of the turnoff is part of the planning. This helps you see the names not just as destinations, but also to consider what to expect along each route.

Church, village layout and heritage

The church in Le Châtellier was built between 1849 and 1853 by Jacques Mellet. It preserves a bas-relief from an altarpiece in the former church, featuring trefoil arches. This relief adds a specific detail to the building’s history: it comes from the previous church, while the present church dates from the mid-19th century.

The original layout of the village of Le Châtellier has also been preserved. This means that the village’s history is reflected not only in individual buildings, but also in its historic layout.

In 2013, several parts of Château de la Vieuville were listed as a Monument historique. These include the 19th-century residence, with its façades and roofs, vestibule, interior staircase and dining room; the façades and roofs of the former manor house; and the landscaped park with its bodies of water and hydraulic features. The listing thus covers both architectural elements and features of the parkland.

The manor house of La Hunaudais has existed since the early 15th century. By contrast, 2013 is the year Château de la Vieuville was listed as a Monument historique. This distinction helps avoid confusing a reference to a manor house’s long history with the later listing date of a different heritage site.

“Terres d’Histoire,” a historical performance held annually, takes place at Parc du Fretay in Le Châtellier. If you want to plan your stay around a particular edition, check the event dates before travelling.
