Janzé offers several reasons to stay: a striking neo-Romanesque church, traces of its mill heritage, an urban walking route and an indoor leisure park. When planning your visit, it is worth bearing in mind the different time requirements and visitor conditions for these attractions.

Architecture and Culture in Janzé

The present-day Saint-Martin Sacré-Coeur church was built to plans by Jules and Henri Mellet. Its cornerstone was blessed on October 18, 1874; it was consecrated on December 21, 1885, and construction was completed in 1887. The neo-Romanesque church has a Latin cross floor plan, ribbed and groin vaults, a dome, a portal tower and a rounded apse. Its features include significant sculpted decoration, particularly on the capitals, as well as the alternating use of different materials. The building’s history and design offer two distinct ways to appreciate this striking structure.

Another chapter in local history can be found at Champ-de-la-Pierre: the Menhir dit de La Pierre des Fées is a Neolithic monument in Janzé and was classified as a historic monument by decree on October 19, 1963. It is privately owned. If you would like to see the menhir in person, please check access arrangements in advance. At Le Gentieg, a varied cultural season offers comedy, theater and performances for young audiences. The program changes with each season; if you plan to attend a performance, time your visit around the specific performance dates.

Adventure and Walking

Enigmaparc is an indoor leisure park at ZA du Bois de Teillay, 10 rue du Tellier, 35150 Janzé. Under one roof, it brings together twelve themed adventure courses in a building with 2,400 m² of mazes. You will need at least three hours to complete all the courses. The content of individual courses may change, so bear this in mind if you have a particular theme in mind.

As an alternative to the indoor adventure courses, the Rando écureuil is an easy urban walking route, about two hours long and 7.5 kilometers in length, passing six points of interest. Along the way, you will encounter pollarded oaks: short trunks with thickened branch bases and a crown of branches above, a recurring feature of the landscape here. Caring for and renewing these trees serves ecological interests, helps preserve the riverbanks and protects the local landscape. The walk, at about two hours, and a visit to all Enigmaparc courses, at least three hours, therefore represent clearly different blocks of time for your planning. Practical conditions on the route may change; check them before setting out.

Landscape and Mill Heritage

The course of the Châtelerie is also one of the distinctive features of the Rando écureuil. Restoration work lengthened the stream and reduced its gradient so that it could regain a more sinuous morphology and its hydrobiological functions. Together with the pollarded oaks, this section shows how landscape management and the shape of a watercourse are highlighted along the route.

The La Robidelais route documents Janzé’s mill heritage. Seven mills are recorded: the watermill Moulin de la Franceule, dating from 1904 to 1914, and the windmills of Châtellier, de la Tremblaye, du Rocher, de Garmeaux, de Brulon and de la Jaroussaye. Comparing one watermill with six windmills makes the variety of this historic collection tangible without treating the different structures as if they were the same.

Getting to Enigmaparc

To reach Enigmaparc, take the D41 on the Rennes–Angers route; from the Janzé Nord exit, continue to ZA du Bois de Teillay in the Haut Bois district, in the direction of Châteaugiron. Enigmaparc offers a free eight-seat shuttle from Corps-Nuds SNCF station. It must be reserved at least 48 hours in advance. Check the latest route and shuttle information before travelling, and take the reservation requirement into account when planning your time.

Janzé can be explored through a range of interests: architectural history and cultural events sit alongside walking, landscape management and adventure courses. The time required for each activity can be a useful starting point when choosing accommodation and planning your stay, while keeping the activities and their conditions clearly distinct.
