Château history, church architecture, and routes through heathland, forest and rocky terrain offer different ways to explore Goven. The Château de Blossac and the Église Saint Martin represent distinct historical and architectural perspectives; several routes add natural and landscape themes to this picture.

Château history and church architecture

The Château de Blossac is a 17th-century château in the commune of Goven, in the Ille-et-Vilaine département. Construction of the present château began in 1672. It is set in a 19th-century English-style landscape park. Outbuildings around the château include an orangery, stables and a kennel.

The present-day Église Saint Martin dates from 1850 and is dedicated to Saint Martin and Saint Goulven. It has three naves and a Latin-cross ground plan. Its architectural features also include a ribbed vault and a bell-tower porch; the church is Gothic Revival in style. The description thus combines a clear basic form with several details of the building.

The monument to Saint-Samson also has a specific historical connection: it was erected in 1880 and depicts Saint-Samson beneath a statue of the Virgin Mary and a Christian cross. Stones from an earlier chapel were probably used to build it. The uncertainty concerns the reuse of the stones, not the scene depicted or the year it was erected.

Hiking trails through heathland, forest and rocky terrain

The Circuit des Landes de Caffort is an 11 km circular route described as easy, with a stated duration of more than three hours. It starts at the car park of the Chapelle de l'Hermitage in Goven. The route passes through heathland, forest and rocky outcrops in the Canut valley, a Natura 2000 site that is home to many birds, including several protected species. When planning, consider the stated duration as well as the distance. Trail conditions and markings may change; check them before setting out.

Another hiking trail in Goven is 14 km long and passes close to forests, ponds, manor houses, chapels and châteaux. The GR n°37B crosses Goven, passes near the Chapelle de l'Hermitage and then follows the former railway line towards Baulon. This long-distance trail therefore offers a different point of reference from the circular route: its described course continues towards Baulon.

The Circuit de l'Ermitage descends through a forest to the Étang de la Roche. Along the way, there are outcrops of red schist and heathland vegetation. These landscape features complement the forest, heathland and rocky terrain of the other routes with a pond and visible rock formations.

Pilgrimage and religious tradition

The Chapelle Sainte-Anne de l'Hermitage is a traditional pilgrimage site. Every year, many people gather there to pray on the Sunday closest to 26 July. The specific form the practice takes may change over time. If you are planning your trip around the pilgrimage date, check the information for the relevant year.

Goven offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: building history and architectural features sit alongside an annual religious tradition and routes through varied landscapes. The routes have different points of reference: the distance and duration are given for the Circuit des Landes de Caffort, while the GR n°37B is described by its course towards Baulon.
