Baulon offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a stay: architectural history around Château de la Musse, Église Saint-Blaise and La Gêole, as well as waterways, forests and nature-focused activities. You can focus on architecture or explore the landscape and excursions.

Pond, Forest and Vallée du Canut

The Grand Étang de la Musse covers 38 hectares and has a circumference of 4 kilometres. Its ecological classification as an oligotrophic-mesotrophic pond adds a description of its water type to these size details. The area, circumference and classification highlight different characteristics of the same pond.

The Forêt de la Musse covers 256 hectares. It contains high-forest stands of oak, beech and various pines; wild boar, a few deer, hares, rabbits and squirrels are also found there. This description of the trees and wildlife complements the profile of the Grand Étang. The Vallée du Canut area covers 427 hectares and lies partly in Baulon.

Architectural History in Three Stops

Château de la Musse was built in the mid-19th century on a hill, on a lawn above a pond. It lies west of the remains of an older 17th-century château. Only a residential pavilion and outbuildings remain from the earlier château. Château de la Musse is privately owned.

Église Saint-Blaise was rebuilt between 1831 and 1849 in three construction phases by the architect Jean-François Pointeau. It faces east and has the ground plan of a Latin cross. Its structure comprises a single-nave body and a projecting transept; the choir ends in a polygonal shape. Chapels are attached to the sides of the north and south ends of the choir. The church’s form can thus be understood as a combination of nave, transept, choir and side chapels.

La Gêole offers a different historical reference: it was built in 1574 and served as a courthouse and prison. This earlier use differs from the 19th-century construction phases relevant to the château and church.

Nature-Focused Activities

Numerous educational excursions on flora and fauna take place in the Vallée du Canut. Nature associations offer events on vegetation, natural habitats, ornithology, Orthoptera and butterflies. If an event is important to your trip, check the specific date in advance. This lets you include the area’s nature topics in your stay planning.

Getting Your Bearings

The Place de la Noë stop on line 6 of the BreizhGo network provides public transport access to Église Saint-Blaise. Check the current BreizhGo service before travelling. La coulée verte in the centre of Baulon is another point of reference: a path circles the site and is accessible year-round from the church car park. The site is still being developed.

Your options therefore differ between historical attractions, nature-focused events and a path in the town centre. Which ones you combine depends on whether you want to focus on architectural history, waterways and forests, or excursions in the Vallée du Canut.
