Santec’s coastline stretches for 14 kilometres and includes white sandy beaches. At Plage du Dossen, you’ll find a 1.5-kilometre beach with fine sand, opposite Île de Sieck. Plage du Theven forms a natural harbour for many recreational fishers. Beaches, tides, trails and forest offer different ways to spend your time here.

Beach and Tides

At low tide, you can walk around Île de Sieck from Plage du Dossen, provided the owners allow it. About two and a half hours after low tide, the island is surrounded by water again. Plan any such walk around the tides, and check locally that you have the necessary permission before setting off.

Coastal Trails and Forest

The Forêt domaniale de Santec covers 97 hectares. It is home to rare coastal plants and orchid populations. Public paths cross the forest, which also has a fitness trail. A path from the “Bon vent” Centre leads towards Plage du Dossen. Alongside open coastal landscapes, you can choose forest trails and a distinct natural setting.

The routes vary in landscape and stated duration. The Circuit du Pouldu is a two-hour circular walk that starts and ends at the car park by the Pouldu playground. Along the way, it offers views of Île de Batz, Roscoff and cultivated fields. Duration and access may change; check the route details before setting off.

The Circuit de la Croix Celtique can be cycled with children on small paved roads through the fields. The Circuit du Dossen passes through the dunes and the Forêt domaniale de Santec, with views of Plage du Dossen and Île de Sieck. The long-distance coastal trail GR 34, also known as the Customs Officers’ Path, passes through Santec; check local conditions in advance.

Water Sports at Dossen

Seasonal activities at Plage du Dossen include funboarding, kitesurfing and land sailing. The Centre de Glisse de Santec offers water sports for ages four and up, as well as rentals, courses and lessons for adults and children. Listed activities include kayaking, water trekking, surfing, bodyboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and wingfoiling; there is also a large SUP board for eight people. Kayaking equipment is available to rent, and kayak trips offer a way to explore the small islands around Santec. Providers’ offerings may change.

For surf and stand-up paddle lessons, Dossen Surf School lists the period from April to November; introductory sessions and courses take place at Plage du Dossen, and the minimum age is six. École de Surf du Léon offers surf lessons in Santec at Dossen for ages eight and up, and provides all the equipment. The age limits and dates can help you compare options; provider terms may also change.

History and Heritage

Santec’s history is also closely connected to its coastline: seven Gaulish salt-making sites attest to salt production and trade. Its heritage also includes prehistoric sites and graves, as well as a chapel, a washhouse, a cross, a well and a fisherman’s house.

The Chapelle du Dossen bears the name “ITRON VARIA AR MOR,” translated as “Our Lady of the Sea.” The Chapelle Saint Claude was built in Le Dossen in 1962 to formalise worship there. Its name refers to an older chapel, which was presumably buried by sand. These places and the evidence of salt production add a historical perspective on Santec to its beach and nature experiences.
