Pleyben is part of the Armorique Regional Natural Park and offers several distinct themes to explore: a historic parish enclosure, chapels and crosses, trails, and a visit to a chocolate workshop. When planning your stay, you can choose between architectural history, a route with a stated duration, a hike with a stated distance, and a visit whose booking and access details may vary. This lets you choose a focus based on your own interests without treating all the offerings as a single program.

Parish Enclosure and Church Architecture

The parish enclosure of Pleyben was built between the 15th and 17th centuries. It comprises a church with a sacristy, a porch, an ossuary, a calvary and an enclosing wall. Protected as a historic monument, the parish enclosure is now one of the “7 monumental calvaries of Brittany.” The complex thus brings together several architectural elements, and its construction spanned several centuries.

Saint-Germain Church was built in 1530 and is considered an example of 16th-century Flamboyant Gothic architecture. Its construction date and stylistic classification provide a specific historical and architectural reference point. Together with the parish enclosure, which took shape over a longer period, the church offers another perspective on Pleyben’s religious heritage.

Chapels with Distinctive Architectural Details

The chapels also have distinct features. The oldest parts of the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lannélec date from 1490. Its main window preserves remnants of older stained glass, including five heraldic depictions. The Chapelle de la Trinité in Lanridec is characterized by a Latin cross floor plan and a single-nave structure. The chapel also contains a depiction of the Holy Trinity carved from Kersantite.

The Chapelle Saint-Laurent in Rozalghen has another pair of distinctive features: its windows have Flamboyant tracery, and the chapel is associated with a fountain topped by a modern statue and vaulted by a round arch. Interest in the local religious buildings is therefore not limited to a single type of structure; windows, floor plans, furnishings and associated architectural features offer different points of focus.

Crosses and Calvaries

Crosses are also part of Pleyben’s cultural heritage. The Restavidan Cross probably dates from the 14th or 15th century. The Croaz Nu Cross is among the works considered architecturally and historically significant by the regional heritage authorities. The heritage inventory lists 24 crosses and calvaries in the commune: 19 crosses and five calvaries. This figure gives an idea of the variety within this group of monuments, while Restavidan and Croaz Nu each have their own dating or assessment details.

Walking Tour, Hike and Cycling

The “Chemin faisant” discovery walk takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check its local availability before your trip. The hike from Pont-Coblant is approximately 8 kilometers long. These figures offer different reference points for planning your day: the walking tour has an approximate duration, while the hike is described by its distance. They therefore cannot be interpreted as the same kind of estimate for time or effort.

For cycling trips, the towpath along the Nantes-Brest Canal is suitable for rides ranging from half-day outings to multi-day excursions. This time frame offers a different scale of planning from the walking tour’s approximate duration or the hike’s distance. Choose the right way to explore based on whether you want a route with a set duration, a hiking trail or a longer cycling itinerary.

A Visit to the Chocolate Workshop

Maison Chatillon offers a visit to its chocolate workshop in Pleyben, where visitors can watch, learn and taste. The workshop demonstrates how Breton granite, fine galettes and palets are made. The focus here is on the production process and tasting rather than architecture. Those who want to add a culinary theme to their cultural discoveries will find a different focus here from that of the churches, chapels and crosses. As booking and access details may vary, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.
