Guimiliau’s cultural character brings together parish enclosure architecture, religious sculpture, and an exhibition devoted to parish enclosures. These themes are easy to distinguish: the Enclos Paroissial showcases architectural variety, the large Calvary focuses on figures and scenes, and the Centre « Les Enclos » uses a range of interpretive formats. When planning your visit, you can decide whether architecture, sculpture, or interpretation of the parish enclosures is your main interest.

The Enclos Paroissial as an architectural ensemble

The Enclos Paroissial de Guimiliau was built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The ensemble includes a triumphal arch, a bell tower, an ossuary, a large porch, a church, a sacristy, a funerary chapel, and a cemetery. These elements show the range of the site: the arch and tower stand alongside the porch, church, and sacristy, as well as the burial areas. When viewing the site, it helps not to group the names together as a single building type. They refer to different architectural forms and areas within the parish enclosure. This keeps the ensemble in view as a whole without confusing its individual components.

Figures and form at the Calvary

The large Calvary of Guimiliau was created between 1581 and 1588 in workshops in Landerneau. It comprises more than 200 figures and depicts scenes from the childhood and Passion of Christ. Its sculptural program therefore offers both a narrative and a formal dimension: the scenes frame the subjects depicted, while composition and the movement of the drapery folds are important to its artistic interpretation. On the basis of these two features, the Calvary is among the largest in Brittany. The dates also differ: the Calvary was created within a specific period, while the Enclos is assigned the broader construction period of the 16th and 17th centuries. If you are interested in sculpture, you can consider the subjects depicted by the figures and the design of their garments as two distinct points of focus.

The exhibition at the Centre « Les Enclos »

The Centre d’Interprétation de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine « Les Enclos » in Guimiliau has a 150 m² exhibition devoted entirely to parish enclosures. The exhibition uses wooden models, facsimiles, games, and staged projections. This offers a range of ways to explore the subject, from models and reproductions to interactive and staged formats. Those interested in architecture will find a dedicated focus here, alongside the opportunity to look at individual buildings and sculptures.

The Centre also has a 40 m² multipurpose room for introductory visits, educational workshops, conferences, and temporary exhibitions. The program may vary. If you would like to include a workshop, conference, or temporary exhibition in your travel plans, check the current program in advance.

Fontaine and Lavoir Saint Miliau

The Fontaine Saint Miliau depicts Saint Miliau as the King of Cornwall. His attributes include a torque, a scepter, and a sword; on either side are two severely damaged depictions of Christ on the Cross. Here, the focus is on the figure depicted, his attributes, and the accompanying crucifixion scenes.

At the Lavoir Saint Miliau, by contrast, the focus is on the construction: its single-pitched roof is covered with stone slabs and rests on a wall at the rear and on the sides. At the front, it is supported by three square granite pillars. The two places thus offer different points of interest: the Fontaine features a figurative depiction, while the impression made by the Lavoir is shaped by its roof and supporting elements. A cultural walk through Guimiliau therefore offers two clearly distinct themes: imagery and construction.

Another planning option

The Circuit des 2 rivières is about 15 km long. If you would like to include the route in your trip, you can consider it as a separate planning item alongside the cultural themes. This makes it possible to distinguish between exploring architecture and art and following the route itself, without combining them into a single visit program.
