Goulien combines a landscape of contrasting features shaped by the wind, a clearly seasonal nature theme and several distinctive cultural sites. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on the coast and birdlife, a particular route orientation, or architectural and art history.

Coast, Plateau and Birdlife

The northern part of Goulien is bordered by the cliffs of the Bay of Douarnenez. There lies a low-lying plateau with sparse vegetation, exposed to the winds. In the south, hills and valleys with denser vegetation shape the landscape. Thus, open, wind-swept terrain contrasts with a more varied and vegetated part of the landscape—a difference that can help guide your choice of nature themes for your stay.

In the Réserve du Cap Sizun, a 3 km walking trail leads to panoramic views over the Iroise Sea. The reserve is open free of charge all year round; local access conditions may vary. Check these before your visit if you plan to include the trail in your itinerary. The trail’s length and panoramic views give the nature area a distinct focus alongside the landscape differences between the north and south.

In spring, common murres, northern fulmars and Manx shearwaters are among the birds that nest along the coast of Goulien within the reserve. If you are interested in birdlife, spring is the specific seasonal reference point for this nature theme. The walking trail and views of the Iroise Sea add a distinct landscape perspective.

Routes with Different Orientations

The PR® 11 route leads through the heath to Lézoulien and the GR®34. By contrast, the Deux Baies VTT 10 loop crosses Cap Sizun from north to south, from the Bay of Douarnenez to the Bay of Audierne. The routes can be compared by their described courses: the PR® 11 is oriented towards Lézoulien and the GR®34, while the VTT loop follows a crossing between two bays. This makes it possible to choose based on geographical orientation, without treating the two routes as equivalent types of trail. As trail conditions may change, check the conditions on the PR® 11 before setting out.

Heritage and La Maison du Vent

The church of Goulien is dedicated to Saint Goulven and was built in the first half of the 16th century. Today, only the south portal remains from that period. The churchyard also contains three Iron Age funerary stelae, which are listed in the inventory of historic monuments. These are distinct historical traces side by side: the church’s architectural history and archaeological finds from the Iron Age. If you are interested in both subjects, this combination offers a concrete comparison between a building and funerary stelae.

The Chapelle de Lannourec houses a gilded stone statue of the Virgin Mary dating from the 15th century. La Maison du Vent is located in the former school in the centre of Goulien; an interactive presentation there conveys the different facets of the wind. This approach to the subject of wind differs from the description of the exposed plateau: here, wind is presented through an interactive experience, while there it shapes the landscape being described.
