In Carhaix-Plouguer, the story of the ancient city of Vorgium continues into the present: archaeological remains and digital technologies make its history a central focus of a visit. There are also insights into brewing history, a historic corner house and opportunities for active pursuits. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to different interests instead of limiting all your discoveries to a single theme.

Discover Vorgium and the Aqueduct

Carhaix was founded 2,000 years ago under the name Vorgium. The Centre for Virtual Archaeological Interpretation brings this past to life through archaeological remains and digital technologies. In the archaeological garden, you can use a tablet and augmented reality to explore the ancient city's streets, shops, baths, private gardens and public fountain. Another digital perspective is offered by the cooperative, immersive virtual-reality escape game: its historical scenario challenges participants to save the treasure of the Vorgium aqueduct.

The aqueduct also offers a tangible connection to the city's history. Its second underground conduit section was 27 kilometres long and was built in the 3rd century AD. The Carhaix section of the aqueduct trail consists of three stretches within the town. History and the walking tour are thus directly connected thematically, without combining the individual sections into a single route.

La Maison du Sénéchal opens a window onto another period: the corner house was built in the second third of the 16th century and restored in 1606. It is designated a historic monument. The designation applies to parts of the building on Rue Auguste Brizeux, dating from 1922, and on Rue Félix Faure, dating from 1976. Alongside the ancient past, you can also explore a building from a later period in the city's history.

Brewing History and Active Alternatives

The Musée Coreff focuses on the production of craft-brewed beer. An interactive visit combines videos about the brewery's history with an interactive 3D model explaining the individual stages of production. Visits to Brasserie Coreff also include a beer tasting at the bar. History and knowledge of the brewing process come together here; no current time is specified for the visit itself, so you should check the details separately when planning.

Those who would like to include some activity alongside culture will find a range of options. The Breizh Adrénaline adventure park in Carhaix-Plouguer offers ten courses with 160 stations. These include a free jump from a height of twelve metres and two long ziplines: one is 400 metres long and crosses the river, while the other is 950 metres long and passes over the maze. Carhaix Golf is located in the wooded, hilly valley of the Hyères and has a hilly, wooded 9-hole compact course, a driving range and practice greens. The activities differ considerably: courses and ziplines on the one hand, golf and practice areas on the other.

Plan Cycling Routes and Your Journey

Carhaix is a reference point for two different greenways. Greenway No. 6 runs from Saint-Méen-Le-Grand via Carhaix and then continues above the Canal de Nantes à Brest to Camaret; along the way, it goes around Lac de Guerlédan. Greenway No. 7 runs from Roscoff via Carhaix towards Concarneau. The routes described therefore differ, among other things, in their starting and ending points. As the route may change, check the official information before setting off.

For travel from Paris, the stated train connection follows the Paris–Brest TGV line to Guingamp, then continues to Carhaix by TER. Check current train connections before travelling. A mobile tour offered by Taurig takes visitors to seven places that are central to everyday life for the people of Carhaix: Saint-Trémeur Church, Vorgium, the hospital, the stadium, the Lapic fountain, the station and Château Rouge. Electric charging stations have been installed in front of the Espace Aqualudique Plijadour in Carhaix; confirm their availability before setting off.
