Brélès offers several specific reasons to visit: its location on the Aber Ildut, Château de Kergroadez, historic church features and a Breton wedding tradition. There are also walks along the GR34 and a designated horse-riding trail. When choosing a destination, you can focus on cultural history, landscapes or a trip planned around a set event date. August 15 is the key calendar date for the reenactment of a Breton wedding; the other themes offer different considerations for planning.

On the Aber Ildut in the Pays d’Iroise

Brélès is located on the Aber Ildut in the Pays d’Iroise. The western part of Brélès is within the “Ouessant-Molène” Natura 2000 site. Brélès is also part of the Iroise Marine Natural Park and lies within the “Aber Ildut” type 1 ZNIEFF. For travelers interested in nature and landscapes, these named natural areas add further context to the town’s location on the Aber Ildut.

Building history and historic features

Construction of Château de Kergroadez began in 1602 and was completed in 1613. These two dates place the château’s history firmly in the early 17th century. Another historic feature is the church in Brélès: formerly a simple chapel, it is one of the few churches in the Pays d’Iroise to have preserved its enclosure wall. Its former function and its surviving enclosure wall are two distinct aspects of its history. Other historic features to discover on walks include crosses and calvaries.

Walks and horse-riding trail

From Brélès, the GR34 follows sunken lanes along the Aber Ildut. Walks on the GR34 from Brélès head towards Lanildut or Le Conquet. These are two different points of reference for planning your route: the sunken lanes and Aber Ildut describe the route, while Lanildut and Le Conquet indicate the directions mentioned. The Brélès–Porspoder horse-riding trail no. 3 is one of the Pays d’Iroise riding routes. This gives you a choice of different activities: a walk on the GR34 or a designated horse-riding trail. Details of the horse-riding trail may be revised; check the latest information before setting out.

Breton wedding tradition

A reenactment of a Breton wedding takes place in Brélès every year on August 15. The Noce bretonne features Breton dance performances, an introduction to the dance and a fest-deiz. A wedding meal featuring Kig ha farz is also served at the event. August 15 is an annual date, while the program and menu details may vary from year to year. Check the program for the year in question if you are planning your visit around a particular event.
