In Audierne, maritime history, a biodiverse estuary and coastal paths reveal different sides of the town. A striking example of its seafaring history is the mast system devised by Julien Hippolyte Fénoux. It was intended to inform ships whether harbours were navigable and guide them through difficult waters. One of the first masts was completed in Audierne in 1843.

Maritime heritage in the town

The restored Mât Fénoux is open to visitors and has been protected as a historic monument since 2022. An interpretation trail explores Audierne’s maritime history, heritage and biodiversity through explanatory panels. It runs continuously from the physical bridge to the Sainte-Évette landing stage, opposite the former lifeboat station.

The Passerelle des Capucins also tells the story of the connection between the structure and the harbour: it marks the end of the towpath to Audierne harbour. Its Eiffel-style metal structure lets the swell break in the back of the bay without affecting the harbour waters or the boats moored there.

Another historic site is the Saint-Raymond Church, also known as Saint-Rumon. It dates from the 16th century; its bell tower was rebuilt in the early 18th century. By decree of 11 May 1932, the church was listed as a historic monument.

The Goyen estuary and walking trails

The Goyen estuary flows into the sea at Audierne. It is a natural area with especially rich biodiversity and numerous bird species. For those who want to combine history and scenery on a walk, the Le tour d’Audierne PR® 18 circular trail is one option: it is 8.0 kilometres long, takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes, and is rated easy. The starting point is the car park at Quai Jean Jaurès.

The circular trail offers walks through Audierne’s historic districts and along white-sand beaches, as well as views of the Goyen estuary. This gives you both a specific time estimate and a choice of different landscapes and sights when planning your route. Route details may be updated; check the latest route information before setting out.

Aquashow and local specialities

Aquashow combines aquariums with a bird show and offers a 2.5-hour, fun and educational visit for the whole family. The attraction features 160 species across more than 50 aquariums. You’ll find Aquashow at 3 Rue du Goyen, BP 5, 29770 Audierne. As programme details may change, it’s best to check them before your visit.

Audierne is particularly known for sea bass caught by anglers and lobster. The availability of these specialities may vary by season; they are therefore a possible seasonal highlight when planning your trip, not a guarantee of a particular offering.

The harbour and planning your visit

Audierne harbour is a port of call with a connection to Île de Sein, and offers moorings for fishing and recreational boating. Harbour and sailing regulations may change seasonally. If this connection or the moorings are important to your plans, check the latest information in advance.

The Musée maritime du Cap Sizun was closed to the public in 2020 because it no longer met safety standards. Check whether the museum is currently open before visiting.
