Plélo offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: church architecture and memorial sites, the history of silver-lead mining, and hiking trails through forests, valleys and rural landscapes. There are also activities in the valley at Ferme Auberge Au Char à Bancs. As you plan your trip, consider whether you would like to focus mainly on historic buildings, outdoor activities, or a culinary experience as well. The distinctive features of each theme can help you choose the right focus.

Churches and Historic Memorial Sites

Plélo’s former church had a Romanesque nave and Romanesque aisles, thought to date from before the 12th century. The Église Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul in Plélo was built later, between 1872 and 1875, to plans by architect Théodore Maignan. Its 47-metre-high spire was built in 1887.

The furnishings of the present-day church also preserve specific memories. On either side of the nave are two patriotic stained-glass windows honouring the frontline soldiers of the First World War. They were created by Louis Balmet. The tomb of the Count of Plélo, dating from 1734, was once in the former church and can still be seen in the present-day church.

The Sainte-Anne Chapel is Gothic and dates from the 15th century. Together, these buildings and memorial features offer a glimpse of the different historical layers in Plélo. Please check current opening arrangements in advance before visiting the churches and Sainte-Anne Chapel.

Traces of Silver Mining

The mining history offers a different historical focus from the churches. The first silver-lead mining operations took place at the Moulin du Val site in 1764. The La Ville Alhen silver-lead mine was initially in operation from 1766 to 1790, and again from 1922 to 1931. These dates describe different stages: Moulin du Val marks the beginning of the operations, while La Ville Alhen had two periods of operation. Those interested in the town’s industrial history will find an insight here that extends beyond its religious architecture.

Hiking Through Forests and Valleys

Plélo’s hiking trails pass through forests, valleys and rural landscapes, and are suitable for all levels of difficulty.

Activities in the Valley at Au Char à Bancs

The valley activities at Ferme Auberge Au Char à Bancs include a walk through the valley. Outdoor playgrounds, pedal boats and ponies add to the activities on offer there. A visit to the Jardin de Benjamin is also part of the valley offering. Alongside the hiking trails, there are other outdoor options to choose from, without having to combine the various activities into a set itinerary.

Au Char à Bancs also serves a traditional pork and vegetable pot-au-feu, slow-cooked in the fireplace for four hours. This gives a visit a culinary side as well. If you are planning activities or a meal, check the current opening hours and availability of each offering in advance.
