Eleven kilometres of rocky coastline, interspersed with sandy coves: Penvénan offers a clear focus for days by the sea. There are also walking trails, water sports, markets and traces of history stretching from the megalithic era to maritime heritage. When planning your trip, you can choose between activities in the tidal zone, routes through the coastal landscape and cultural discoveries.

Tides and Coastal Landscapes

The tidal flats and foreshore off Penvénan are suitable for shellfish gathering and shore fishing on foot. These activities take place right in the tidal zone. During equinoctial tides, the exposed foreshore extends almost 1,500 metres out to sea. The Autour de Buguélès route also passes through a wild, rugged coastal landscape dotted with islands and islets. Its appearance changes completely with the tide. The Marais du Goaster reveals another side of the coast: salt-tolerant plants such as glasswort grow close to the sea, while reeds and willows shape the vegetation in the wetter areas.

On Foot, by Bike and on the Water

The GR®34 coastal path passes through Buguélès and Port-Blanc before reaching Trestel Beach. Almost 40 kilometres of walking trails in Penvénan are lined with well-preserved tall field embankments. Those looking for a cycling route can also take the signposted Boucle vélo No. 14, which partly follows the same route as La Vélomaritime®.

On the water, the network of islands around Port-Blanc connects paddling routes with a natural coastal landscape. Local navigation conditions vary with the tide and weather. The municipal Centre Nautique de Port-Blanc offers courses for beginners and advanced participants, as well as rentals of kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and sailing boats. The activities on offer also include catamaran sailing, dinghy sailing, sea kayaking, windsurfing, stand-up paddling and trips on cruising sailboats. The programme and rentals may vary seasonally.

Chapels, Megaliths and Gardens

Several traces of different historical periods converge in Port-Blanc. The settlement appears on a nautical chart dating from 1570. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Port-Blanc has been classified as a Monument historique since 1936. Its history goes back further: in the 13th century it initially served as a watchtower, while its religious function predominated from the late 15th century onwards. In Buguélès, the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas is dedicated to Saint Nicholas; inside is a model of a three-masted ship, also dedicated to this patron saint of sailors.

The Tossen Keller megalithic site offers a much older point of reference: it dates from around 2500 BC and comprises 58 stone blocks. The four-hectare Jardin de Pellinec offers another way to explore cultural history. Its sections include an exotic garden, an Australian garden and an English garden, a Himalayan avenue and a water lily pond. Seaweed was traditionally cut on Île Bruc during the 19th century and the early 20th century.

Markets and Seasonal Events

Penvénan has weekly markets for fresh, local produce throughout the year. Market arrangements may change depending on the season or municipal decisions. In addition, a summer market takes place in Buguélès on Mondays from 5 to 8 pm; local associations run a crêpe stall there. In Port-Blanc, the summer market is held on Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm. For these seasonal events, it is worth checking the latest dates and times before visiting.

This makes it possible to explore Penvénan in line with your travel interests, without squeezing every activity into a fixed day plan.
