In Hengoat, different aspects of the local heritage come together: the narrow Bizien Valley with its waterfall, churches and manor houses, and traces of the former processing of flax. The walking routes also offer a concrete range of options for planning: their stated lengths range from 1.5 to 12 kilometres, and their durations from 30 minutes to three hours. This lets you choose how to balance the landscape, architectural history and trails according to the themes and time frame that interest you.

The Bizien Valley and trails through Hengoat

The narrow Bizien Valley runs through eastern Hengoat, and there is a waterfall in the valley. This makes the landscape a focus in its own right alongside the buildings. The Logodenn-dall educational trail connects the Bocage landscape with Hengoat’s architectural heritage. Its themes include stone, water, folk beliefs and change over time. It starts in the car park directly in front of the town hall and is listed as 12 kilometres long, with a duration of three hours.

Other routes offer different distances and durations: the Route des talus et des routoirs Ă  lin is 7 kilometres long and listed as taking two hours. The Circuit de Hengoat par les routoirs de Convenant Diuzet loop is listed as 10 kilometres and 2.5 hours. At 1.5 kilometres and 30 minutes, the Sentier du Douron is the shortest of these trails. These figures make the different time frames easy to compare, without requiring you to plan every route as part of a single outing.

Two cycling options are also listed, each with its own distance. The Vélo promenade No. 22 “Entre Trieux et Jaudy” cycling tour is 22 kilometres long. The Circuit VTT du Pays Rochois mountain biking network includes routes ranging from 10 to 30 kilometres. This lets you choose between a specific cycling tour and a network of routes of varying lengths.

Church, Calvary and historic customs

The parish church of Saint-Maudez was built in 1846 and 1847. It houses a reliquary arm dating from the first quarter of the 15th century, which was altered in 1540. The same church thus brings together 19th-century architectural history and an older religious work of art. Summer guided tours of the church are listed. If you would like to plan a tour, check in advance whether tours are offered during your preferred dates.

Another dated monument is the Calvaire de la Ville neuve, built in 1684. At Convenant Diuzet there is a fountain and two basins used for retting flax. The site is also associated with a former local tradition: people prayed there for children who were late to walk, invoking Santez Majili. Traou Dour also has traces of water use and flax processing: there are fountains, a washhouse and a basin for retting flax.

Manor houses and the history of milling

The surviving Trolong Braz manor house was built in the second half of the 15th century. It includes a private chapel integrated into the manor house, whose design is notable both historically and architecturally. The remains of the Le Rumain manor house date from the late 15th century. They include fireplaces, several window openings and a dovecote. The two sites have different points of interest: at Trolong Braz, the chapel is part of the manor house, while at Le Rumain, individual surviving architectural features are recorded.

Mills also shape the history of local working life. The history of Moulin Rolland can be traced over four centuries, from 1547 to 1955. It was probably converted from a grain mill into a mill for breaking and processing flax in the late 19th or early 20th century. The long time span and the presumed later conversion show two distinct chapters in the mill’s history. The site at Daniou includes a former watermill; its identification as a former mill differs from the documented time span of Moulin Rolland.
