Beaches with different attractions
Plage du Corps de Garde is considered the wildest beach in the commune. It can only be reached on foot via the GR 34. If you plan to visit this beach, bear in mind that coastal conditions can affect access. Plage du Moulin offers different options: it is suitable for swimming and beach games; in the tidal area, you can collect shellfish or fish.
At Plage du Moulin, the beach club and leisure centre also offer beach volleyball lessons, as well as courses and rentals for kayaks, windsurf boards and catamarans. These activities are seasonal, and their opening hours and availability may vary. So check in advance which courses and rentals are available on your travel dates. This makes it possible to plan a beach day with water sports or a land-based activity, while keeping seasonal conditions in mind.
Plage des Godelins has bathing cabins and a rotunda. The streets next to the beach are lined with villas dating from 1900; they lead to Boulevard Oscar Legris, named after the founder of the seaside resort. This gives you the chance to complement your time at the beach with a look at the area’s architecture and local history. The three beaches therefore differ not only in how they can be used: access to Corps de Garde is via the GR 34, swimming and leisure activities are the focus at Moulin, while the bathing cabins and rotunda also shape the character of Godelins.
Hiking between the coast and the valley
The customs officers’ path in the commune of Étables-sur-Mer runs partly along the cliffs from Pors Es-Leu to Pointe de la Rognouze and passes Plage du Moulin and Plage des Godelins. For a hike with specific distance and duration details, consider the Entre mer et village route: it is 10 kilometres long, takes three hours and is rated easy. It passes through the Ic valley and reaches the Vau Chaperon departmental site. The two paths address different planning needs: the customs officers’ path focuses on named coastal sections and the beaches along the way, while the distance, duration and difficulty are specified for Entre mer et village. Before setting out on this route, check the trail markers and coastal conditions again.
Churches, railway heritage and culture in Binic
Local history can also be traced through specific buildings. The Porte des Templiers and Chapelle Sainte-Anne are all that remain of the old church in Étables-sur-Mer. Notre-Dame Church in the town centre retains architectural features from the 13th century. Another historic site is Chapelle Notre-Dame-d’Espérance: it was built in 1850 in connection with a vow made by parishioners during a cholera epidemic. Its date of construction and the circumstances behind it give the chapel a distinct place in local history, while distinguishing it from the surviving parts of the old church.
The Viaduc des Pourrhis is a remnant of the former railway line between Saint-Brieuc and Paimpol. It adds another chapter of regional history to the churches and chapels: the former rail connection. In Binic, near the quays, the Musée d’arts et de traditions populaires explores rural and maritime life and its traditions. Its collections and recreated historical scenes bring these themes to life. The museum is in Binic, not in the historic Étables locality.
When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance beach activities, coastal paths and cultural history. If you want to hike, Entre mer et village has a stated time estimate; for a stay centred on beach activities, the season matters for courses and rentals at Moulin. The surviving church features, chapels and viaduct add their own historical highlights. This lets you choose Étables-sur-Mer according to the themes you want to shape your trip, rather than trying to fit every place into a fixed itinerary.
