Duault combines a specific hike with architectural landmarks from several centuries. The Circuit des Collines offers a clearly measured route; chapels, a church and an archaeological site tell different stories of construction and preservation. When choosing your destination, you can weigh up whether a longer day of hiking or the history of individual places should be the main focus.

Hiking the Circuit des Collines

The Circuit des Collines, also known as Circuit 8, is 14 kilometres long, has 255 metres of positive elevation gain and is listed as taking 3 hours and 15 minutes. The route guide published in 2025 gives the starting point as the car park by the calvary at Kernaëret, on the road to Saint-Servais. If you plan to take breaks, allow extra time for them.

The three figures help you estimate the effort involved: the distance describes the total length, the positive elevation gain indicates the climb, and the duration gives the estimated time frame. The route offers views of the countryside around Callac, adding a scenic element to these planning details. Trail conditions can change; check the current state of the route before setting out.

Chapels and architectural history

The Prieuré de Landugen is a 16th-century priory in Duault. Its chapel has been partially listed as a Monument historique since 17 December 1926. The date of the priory and the later date of the listing belong to different stages of its history: one dates the building, while the other denotes its protected status.

The main construction phase of the Chapelle Saint-Jean in Landugen falls in the third quarter of the 16th century. The nave and west façade were completed in 1559. This precise year falls within the broader period and gives a more specific date for two particular parts of the building. The Chapelle Saint-Jean also includes an enclosed area and a calvary. The site as described therefore includes elements beyond the chapel itself, which can also be considered when exploring the place.

The southern part of the Château de Rosviliou was built in the second half of the 18th century. This phase is considerably later than the dating of the Landugen buildings to the 16th century. Anyone interested in architectural history can distinguish between these different periods rather than assigning Duault’s buildings to a single era.

Church and Allée couverte de Toul-an-Urs

The parish church of Saint-Maudez also has a history with two clearly distinguishable dates. The earlier church building in Duault dated from the 16th century and was destroyed; the Église paroissiale Saint-Maudez was completely rebuilt in 1892 by Le Guerranic. The 16th century therefore refers to the predecessor building, while 1892 marks the complete rebuilding.

The partially destroyed Allée couverte de Toul-an-Urs lies beneath a cairn whose oval ground plan is still recognisable. Today, the structure is 7 metres long; originally, it was more than twice as long. The comparison makes the difference between its surviving length and its original extent tangible. At the same time, the cairn and oval ground plan provide a clear visual form to guide the description, without suggesting that the structure has survived intact.

For planning your trip, there are two different ways to get your bearings: the Circuit des Collines has a specified distance, elevation gain and duration; the architectural and heritage histories can be distinguished by their respective dates. This lets you treat the hike as a focus in its own right and place the historic sites within the periods that actually define them.
