Canihuel offers visitors several distinct points of interest: architectural history, stone monuments, water and equestrian sport. Notre-Dame Church and the Chapelle de la Trinité represent different chapters of local history; the menhirs invite direct comparison of their sizes. At Étang du Pélinec, a lakeside path and fishing go hand in hand, while Hippodrome du Petit Paris is dedicated to horse racing.
Churches and architectural history
Notre-Dame Church in Canihuel is an example of 15th-century architecture and is classified as a historic monument. The tower base and choir were already under construction in 1393. The nave, low transept and false transept were completed in 1474. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between the early construction work and the completion of other parts of the building.
The Chapelle de la Trinité, also known as the Chapelle de Saint-Drumé, was built around 1450. It lies on the watershed between the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. The ruins of the former Chapelle de la Trinité were listed as a historic monument by decree dated 29 March 1972.
The Grotte de la Sainte-Vierge and the washhouse are near the town center. The grotto was inaugurated on 9 July 1950. At the Manoir de la Ville Blanche in Canihuel, the south wing has been protected as a historic monument since 12 March 1987—the protection applies to this part of the manor.
Menhirs: comparing heights and dimensions
The Menhir de Goresto is 5.60 meters high, is made of local granite and is visible from the public road. It was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 22 July 1969. The Menhir de Bodquelen dates from the Neolithic period and is made of coarse-grained granite. Its dimensions are 3.80 meters high, 2.38 meters wide and 2.20 meters thick. In 1969, it was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments.
The comparison shows a clear difference: Goresto is 1.80 meters taller than Bodquelen, while Bodquelen’s width and thickness are also noteworthy. Those interested in stone monuments will find two different scales and materials here—local granite at Goresto and coarse-grained granite at Bodquelen.
Étang du Pélinec and equestrian sport
Étang du Pélinec is an 11-hectare body of water on the Sulon. A walking path runs around the pond, where people also fish regularly. Experienced anglers who want to fish for carp and pike can use a Parcours Passion fishing area there. This gives visitors two different ways to enjoy the site: a general walk along the shore and a dedicated fishing option for experienced anglers.
Hippodrome du Petit Paris is located between the communes of Canihuel and Le Haut-Corlay and offers visitors the chance to experience horse racing. Today, racehorses are also schooled and trained there, and flat races are held several times a year. If attending a race is important to your travel plans, check the specific date in advance.
The Pardon de Canihuel also offers a seasonal point of reference: it takes place every year on the second Sunday in July. As the calendar date changes from year to year, check the relevant date when planning your trip.
