Parent offers tangible ways to enjoy a trip focused on landscape, hiking and history: Puy d’Ecouyat is within walking distance, a 67-kilometre hiking route starts at the railway station, and archaeological discoveries show that the area has been inhabited since the Iron Age. When planning your stay, you can therefore decide whether you would like your days to revolve more around a particular hike or around the history of the place.

Landscapes around Puy d’Ecouyat

At 653 metres high, Puy d’Ecouyat offers panoramic views of the Sancy Massif, Montpeyroux and the Chaîne des Puys. It is also geologically distinctive: it is the only volcanic dyke in the sector in question. From Parent, you can reach the Puy on foot via Rue des frères Mirales or Rue du Buisson. The two named access routes and views across several distinct landscapes make this destination an obvious choice when planning your trip.

Compare hiking routes by distance

The La citadelle de Buron hiking route is 11.5 kilometres long and rated moderate. It leads to the summit of Puy Rousset, from where you can see the ruins of a 13th-century feudal castle. The route also offers a 180° panorama of the Cézallier, the Sancy and the Chaîne des Puys. Both the views and a historical landmark along the way are highlights of this hike.

A much longer option is the GR® de Pays: Tour de la Reine Margot – Boucle du Val d’Allier n°2, which is also rated moderate. It is 67 kilometres long and starts at Parent railway station. Both routes are classified as moderate, but their stated distances differ considerably. Comparing the route information can help you gauge the scale of the planned hike without treating the two routes as equivalent. Route details may be updated, so check them again before your hike.

History from the Iron Age to the Wars of Religion

Archaeological discoveries show that Parent has been inhabited since the Iron Age. In 1284, Parent is described as a fiefdom under the authority of a castle and dependent on the Châtellenie de Buron. In March 1590, during the Wars of Religion, the small fort of Parent was besieged by the Duke of Nemours and Sieur Dandelot, accompanied by leaders of the Catholic League. These three historical reference points span early settlement, the medieval feudal system and a specific event from the Wars of Religion.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

Parent can be reached via the A75 motorway and the Gare Parent-Coudes-Champeix railway station. The station is also the starting point for the 67-kilometre GR route; from Parent, you can walk to Puy d’Ecouyat via the two streets mentioned above. When looking for a holiday rental in Parent, these local connections can help guide your decision: consider whether you would prefer to plan your hikes around Puy d’Ecouyat or the route that starts at the station.

Parent also has an orienteering course. Check its current status locally before using it.
