On the right bank of the Allier lies Orbeil, surrounded by fields, pastures and vineyards. Landscape, activity and culture offer different ways to explore the area: the Domaine de Vort is an 8 km hiking loop; on its ninth stage, the Via Allier takes cyclists from Vic-le-Comte to Issoire via Orbeil. The volcanic hill of Ybois and the Auvergnat dance and music group Sabot d’Orbeil Bourrée Yssoirienne add local history and living culture. When choosing where to stay in Orbeil, you can therefore start by deciding which of these themes you want to shape your itinerary.

Hiking and cycling around Orbeil

The Domaine de Vort route follows the Allier, passes through wooded sections and offers lovely open views over the Issoire basin. From there, you can see the village of Saint-Yvoine and the Lembron plain. Riverbanks, woodland and open views all feature on the same 8 km loop, giving the hike a clearly defined landscape. On foot, you can choose a local circular route of a specified length; by bike, the ninth stage of the Via Allier runs from Vic-le-Comte to Issoire via Orbeil. These are two different options: a loop and a cycling stage that places Orbeil on a route connecting two named places.

Ybois: volcanic hill and local history

Ybois is an ancient volcano. A mighty fortress once stood on the hill, but it was destroyed under Louis XIII. In November 1586, Marguerite de Valois, known as Queen Margot, took refuge in the fortress of Ybois. Geology and local history come together at this named site: the hill is associated both with its volcanic origins and with the former fortress and a specific historical episode. For a cultural and historical perspective on Orbeil, Ybois thus brings landscape and the past together.

Dance, music and local traditions

The group Sabot d’Orbeil Bourrée Yssoirienne preserves Auvergnat culture through choreographed bourrées and traditional music performed on cabrettes, accordions and hurdy-gurdies. It welcomes people who would like to dance or learn to dance within the group. The group also holds a tea dance every year; dates vary. If you would like to include this event in your plans, check the specific dates before travelling. While Ybois is associated with historical events, the group focuses on a living dance and music tradition.

The idea of planting a vineyard in Orbeil also forms part of preserving traditions: the aim was to safeguard village traditions and inherited know-how. This initiative adds another connection to the transmission of local knowledge alongside dance and music.

Getting there and finding accommodation

From Issoire, the route to the Domaine de Vort follows the A75, takes the Orbeil exit, then continues along the D9 and the D14 to the hamlet of Pont d’Orbeil. Check road conditions before setting off.
