Views from the village stretch across hills, plateaus and valleys shaped by volcanic activity. In Montaigut-le-Blanc, the focus is not just on hiking trails: the “bourg haut” preserves the historic centre, the Church of Saint-Blaise offers tangible examples of art and architectural history, and the caves of Saint-Julien bring together geology and the former maturing of Saint-Nectaire cheese. You can therefore choose your focus for a visit – village history, landscape or traces of cheese-making.

Village History and Craftsmanship

The upper part of the village, the “bourg haut”, is the historic centre of Montaigut-le-Blanc. From the small car park, wooden signs point the way through the lanes and help you find your bearings. At the top of the old village, the originally Romanesque Church of Saint-Blaise stands on a fortified esplanade, offering lovely views. Its interior is entirely painted. One specific detail is the baptismal font: it was made from lava stone in the Late Romanesque style in the 13th century. Its material, style and date can thus be considered together in a single piece of church furnishings.

Since 2025, Montaigut-le-Blanc has held the “Petite Cité de Caractère” label.

The Atelier du Petit Matin offers a different focus: it is located in a vaulted cellar of the kind typical of Auvergne’s wine-growing villages, and offers participatory pottery workshops for children and adults. If you plan to try pottery, check the booking details in advance; they may change.

Hiking in and around Montaigut-le-Blanc

In Montaigut-le-Blanc, you can explore one of six hiking trails. The GR de Pays “Tour en Pays des Couzes – Boucle du Val d’Allier n°1” also passes through the village. This gives you two specific points of reference for planning: a choice of six hiking trails and a named route that includes Montaigut-le-Blanc.

The comparison helps you decide what to focus on: on one of the six hiking trails, you choose from the local selection; on the GR de Pays, the defining feature is its route through Montaigut-le-Blanc.

The Caves of Saint-Julien

In Saint-Julien, 140 caves were dug into an ancient ash deposit from the Sancy volcano. Some were repurposed for maturing Saint-Nectaire cheese. The “Le Grand Tour entre puys et couze” route leads to Montaigut-le-Blanc and then on to Saint-Julien, where you can explore the former ageing cellars carved into the rock. The caves themselves are private and can only be discovered from the Chemin des caves and the dead-end lanes branching off it. Check access conditions before your visit. The route also offers views of the Cézalier, the Forez and the Limagne plain.
