Landogne: hiking and village culture

Landogne offers two distinct reasons to visit: La Saunade is a longer circular hike through the Combrailles countryside, while the church, château and Christmas nativity scene exhibition add cultural interest. This distinction can help you decide what to focus on when planning your trip. Do you want to spend the day outdoors, or plan your trip around a specific cultural event? The hike has a clearly stated duration, while the recurring nativity scene exhibition takes place on specific dates.

La Saunade: route, duration and itinerary

The moderately difficult La Saunade circular hike is 13.5 kilometres long and is listed as taking 3 hours and 45 minutes. This makes it easy to factor into your day in advance; it is a main excursion in its own right, not a short stroll. The circular route starts at the church in Landogne and follows the River Saunade through the natural landscape of the Combrailles.

A 360° panoramic view over the Combrailles and the Chaîne des Puys gives the hike a sweeping sense of the landscape. After leaving Landogne, the route reaches the long-distance GR4 trail at a footbridge over the Saunade. It continues up the Saunade valley to the Moulin de Chabre. For arrival by car, the car park for La Saunade is at the entrance to Landogne; the church is listed as the starting point of the circular route.

Church and architectural history

The route passes a cross dedicated to the shepherdess Marie Girodon. Landogne church and its 17th-century bell are also among the highlights. The route thus combines the landscape and river with specific local points of interest.

The Château de Landogne is another historic landmark: it was built between 1840 and 1844. An inventory of the parish church of Saint-Pierre in Landogne also mentions a purple liturgical vestment. Two of the textiles date from the 19th century and are probably from the same period. These details provide a different historical context alongside the 17th-century bell.

Les Crèches du Monde and planning your trip

Les Crèches du Monde is a recurring Christmas nativity scene exhibition in the heart of the village of Landogne. Each edition takes place on specific dates, so check the dates for the current edition if the exhibition is the reason for your trip.

At the edition announced for 13 December 2025, more than 65 Christmas nativity scenes were displayed in the village streets. The date and this figure refer to that edition; if you are travelling at another time, the current exhibition dates are what matter.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide what you want to centre your stay around: La Saunade and its stated distance and duration, a date for the nativity scene exhibition, or the cultural and historical points of interest at the church, bell and château. If hiking is your main focus, allow for the stated 3 hours and 45 minutes as a separate block in your day.
