Agonges is known for its thirteen châteaux. Together with the Notre-Dame Church, built in the late 12th or early 13th century, this architectural heritage forms a distinctive focal point of the village. The individual châteaux differ in period and design; their listings as historic monuments range from named structural elements to areas included in their entirety. A hiking trail crosses hedgerow landscapes and château landscapes in Agonges. Architectural history and countryside thus offer two distinct ways to experience the destination.

Châteaux from different periods

Château des Sacrots dates from the 17th century. Its residential building is flanked by two square towers with lanterns. Château de La Pommeraye displays a different architectural combination: the round towers of a 15th-century manor house are paired with the Neoclassical residential building of a country house from the Ancien Régime. The comparison draws attention to different forms: here, a residential building between two square towers; there, a combination of round towers and a Neoclassical residential building.

The historic monument listings for the two châteaux also cover different areas. Château des Sacrots was listed in its entirety as a historic monument by decree dated 3 December 2001. This includes the interior, outbuildings, garden with its pavilions, and the boundary wall with its gates. Château de La Pommeraye is also listed in its entirety; the decree of the same date covers the interior, outbuildings and park. Thus, the protected areas include not only individual façades but also other specifically designated areas in each case.

For Château des Echardons, the listing of 14 March 1977 covers the entrance gate, a tower, and the façades and roofs of the adjoining farm building. The château is considered a good example of 18th-century rural architecture. Château de l’Augère was listed as a historic monument on 10 August 2000. These buildings add further periods and different protected elements to the picture of Agonges.

Church and paths through the countryside

The Notre-Dame Church combines a long construction history with comprehensive protection: it is protected in its entirety as a historic monument, with the listing made on 27 June 1925. Together with the châteaux, it makes Agonges’ cultural focus tangible, while the village’s history is not confined to a single building.

There are two other kinds of ways to enjoy the outdoors. The hiking trail crosses hedgerow landscapes and château landscapes in Agonges. PÉPIT is an outdoor treasure hunt in the village. The two activities differ in form: the trail crosses the countryside, while PÉPIT is designed as a treasure hunt. This means the countryside can be considered as part of your stay, alongside the buildings.

If you are looking for a hotel in Agonges, these highlights can help you get a sense of the village: the châteaux and church offer a cultural focus, while the hiking trail and PÉPIT are outdoor activities.
