Castle ruins, paths along the Gaves Réunis and salmon experiences give Peyrehorade several specific things to enjoy during a stay. Local attractions range from the history of the Viscounts of Orthe to a promenade on a former towpath. There is also a seasonal swimming pool and guided visits with tastings. You can tailor your choice to whether you are more interested in historic sites, time by the river, swimming or the local salmon culture.

Château d’Aspremont and Château d’Orthe

At Château d’Aspremont, history and topography come together. The surviving remains include the mound of the first keep and part of the second. During the feudal period, the château was the residence of all the Viscounts of Orthe. It stood in the eastern part of a plateau above Peyrehorade and the Gaves. Château d’Orthe provides a different historical reference point: it was built on the banks of the Gaves in the 15th century. The reference to the feudal period at Aspremont and the 15th century at Orthe mark different historical periods; likewise, the plateau at Aspremont contrasts with the explicitly stated riverside location of Orthe.

Quai du Roc and Promenade de la PĂŞcherie

For a view of Château d’Orthe, the Quai du Roc is the specific place to head for: it lies on the banks of the Gaves Réunis and offers a view of the château. The Promenade de la Pêcherie is a separate route that also runs along the Gaves Réunis in Peyrehorade. It follows a former towpath, is used for walks and leads to the port of Peyrehorade. Its former use as a towpath and its current use for walks offer two different perspectives on the route. For planning purposes, the route has a clearly identified endpoint at the port; the quay, by contrast, is characterized by its view of Château d’Orthe.

Salmon as a craft and a subject for visits

Since 1929, Maison Barthouil has used traditional methods to prepare salmon: dry salting, slow smoking over alder wood and natural aging. This describes a traditional approach involving three specified processing steps. La Maison du Saumon offers something different: guided museum visits, which end with a tasting, are available there Tuesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Check seasonal opening details before your trip. This lets you distinguish the preparation process from a guided visit with a tasting.

Seasonal swimming

The Piscine de plein air à Peyrehorade has two heated outdoor pools at 27°C and a water play area for younger children. The outdoor pool operates seasonally; check current opening conditions before your visit. Swimming instructors offer lessons for beginners, children, adults and people with disabilities. Schedules may change. If you are planning to take a lesson during your visit, you will need to check the class schedule as well as seasonal opening hours.
