Lesperon brings together a striking church building with insights into resin tapping and crafts. The parish church of Saint-Pierre, the Maison de la Gemme and the Atelier du Crayon offer different ways to explore the town’s history: architecture, the history of resin workers and craft production. There are also trails along streams, springs and a link to a pilgrimage route. You can choose the focus of your stay, from heritage and crafts to the landscape.

Church and architectural heritage

The parish church of Saint-Pierre was completely rebuilt in the 15th century. It features a fortified square bell-tower porch with a machicolation. This combination provides a clear historical context as well as a distinctive architectural detail. For those interested in church architecture, there is more to discover here than the date of the rebuilding: the porch’s fortified design is also part of the building’s character.

The Circuit du Patrimoine et des Lavoirs offers a different perspective. It showcases buildings and chapels in the villages, as well as historic washhouses. Its focus therefore extends beyond a single church and draws attention to a range of examples of architectural heritage. The parish church and the Circuit thus offer two different cultural and historical perspectives: one specific building, and a broader theme encompassing village buildings, chapels and washhouses.

Resin history and crafts

The Maison de la Gemme is an exhibition space and living museum dedicated to local resin tapping and related activities. It documents the history of resin tapping, the social struggles of resin workers, the decline of this work and hopes for its revival. The focus is therefore not only on a craft, but also on its social and historical development.

The Atelier du Crayon offers guided tours of a craft workshop where colored pencils are made from branches. It explains the process, from the colored pencil core to the origin of the wood. This makes it distinct from the Maison de la Gemme: the Atelier focuses on a specific production process, while the Maison explores resin tapping and its history. As tour arrangements may change, check in advance what guided tour options are currently available.

Stream trails, springs and pilgrimage links

Lesperon has trails along streams. Depending on the season, you may see broom, ferns, arum lilies, hawthorn, heather and holly. The plants change with the seasons, so the stream trails add a natural dimension to the area’s architectural and craft-related attractions.

The Lesperon-Saint-Jean Springs Trail connects eight developed springs in the Pays Morcenais. Its focus is a network of springs, while the seasonal vegetation along the stream trails offers another way to experience the landscape. The Saint-Jean spring in Lesperon lies on one of the four main routes to Santiago de Compostela: the Tours route. This clearly defined pilgrimage link offers another perspective on the town.

Getting there and finding a hotel

Lesperon is around 20 minutes from Morcenx-la-Nouvelle railway station. If you plan to include the station in your journey, check travel arrangements for your travel date. When looking for a hotel in Lesperon, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: Saint-Pierre and the Circuit offer architectural and local heritage; the Maison de la Gemme and the Atelier du Crayon cover different craft-related themes; and the stream trails and springs offer a natural or pilgrimage-related perspective.
