In Virsac, a Romanesque church in a medieval setting, the history of two châteaux and an agricultural wine industry come together. You can get to know the village through its architectural history while also taking a look at its winegrowing. If you’d like to include some activity, there is also a designated municipal cycling route and a public garden with a play area for young children.

Église Saint-Genès: Church Architecture and Necropolis

Église Saint-Genès de Virsac dates from the 11th to 12th centuries and is Romanesque; it was restored in the Neo-Gothic style. Its location also tells of an earlier history: its foundations stand on a limestone plateau where a medieval necropolis with graves cut into the rock was discovered. The church building and its archaeological context thus provide two distinct ways to explore Virsac.

The church interior offers another historical point of interest: the 17th-century altarpiece painting depicts Saint Genès. By decree of 5 January 1981, the painting was added to the inventory of historic monuments. In 2026, free self-guided visits are possible by prior arrangement. Confirm access locally before your trip; visits are not intended to take place without prior notice.

Château Bois-Martin and Château Julie

The châteaux also represent different chapters in the village’s history. At the end of the 16th century, Château Bois-Martin was recorded as a manor house and post station on the road between Paris and Bordeaux. Its documented role as a post station is part of its historical context and does not automatically describe its present-day use.

Château Julie, formerly Château de Naudonnet, was built in the 17th century as a manor house for the Boucher de Naudonnet family. The historic estate included English-style landscape gardens and an avenue lined with tall elms. These garden features are part of the estate’s history. Château Julie is also a hotel and restaurant in Virsac; check availability before your trip.

Agriculture and Wine

Virsac retains its agricultural character and produces wines under the protected designation of origin AOC Bordeaux Supérieur. One specific example is Château Géneau: this family-run winery is located in Virsac and has 32 hectares of vineyards. Wine production is therefore one of the local themes, alongside the history of the churches and châteaux.

Cycling Route and Public Garden

The Route de Saint-Antoine is designated as a municipal cycling route. The municipal designation dates from 13 December 2022; check the signage and route continuity locally. This offers a concrete way to plan some cycling during your stay, without assuming a particular route length or connections to other destinations.

Another local place to visit is the public garden in Virsac. It includes a play area for young children. Together with the historical attractions, it offers a different option for planning your day: the church and châteaux represent cultural history, while the garden and cycling route offer additional activities in the village.
