Villegouge brings together a church built over several centuries and archaeological sites, along with a Natura 2000 site and wine experiences. Different time periods are of interest when planning your visit: the history ranges from Neolithic traces to the church’s construction between the 11th and 19th centuries. Wine visits are available by appointment; events take place on specific dates.

Church and Archaeological Traces

The Church of Saint-Pierre is made of limestone. Its construction spanned the 11th to the 19th century; its portal is classified as a French historic monument. The church thus offers a long architectural timeline, while the archaeological sites bring other periods into focus.

Remains of a Neolithic settlement were found on the Tertre de Thouil, the highest point in the commune. These include hut sites, kitchen waste and pottery sherds. Archaeological remains from the Gallo-Roman period have been found in the areas of Meyney and Canet.

The Natura 2000 Site of the Underground Quarries

The Natura 2000 site of the underground quarries of Villegouge covers 960.3 hectares. In addition to Villegouge, it includes Saint-Germain-de-la-Rivière, La Rivière, Saint-Aignan, Lugon and l’Ile du Carnay. The area is considered to be of international importance, bringing a distinct natural focus alongside the town’s historical themes.

About ten bat species live in the network of underground quarries; six of them are listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive. This adds present-day biodiversity to the traces of the past found in the archaeological sites and buildings.

Wine Experiences at Château Boutinet

Château Boutinet is a small, family-run wine estate practicing organic farming. Tours and wine tastings are offered year-round, but only by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit, be sure to arrange a date in advance.

Experiences there also include walks and Rando-Tapas. The fun and educational walk through the vineyards lasts one hour and 15 minutes and introduces visitors to soil cultivation methods. Afterwards, three Boutinet wines are tasted with homemade tapas. The stated duration refers to the walk, which is followed by the tasting. Rando-Tapas dates are seasonal and may change, so it is advisable to check the specific date before your trip.

Events and When to Visit

La Ronde des Vignobles en Fronsadais is a walking event held annually on the second weekend of June. It offers a different date to plan around than tours and tastings at Château Boutinet, which are available year-round by appointment. If your trip is tied to a specific event, check the details for the edition in your travel year; prior arrangements are still important for Château Boutinet. This makes it easy to distinguish between a fixed event weekend and a visit that must be arranged individually when planning your trip.
