Vayres can be explored through three distinct themes: the château on a rocky outcrop at the confluence of the Dordogne and its tributary, the Gestas; river views at Port de Saint-Pardon; and vineyards on terraces along the edge of the Dordogne. Other points of interest include the Église Saint Jean-Baptiste and a milestone with ancient connections. The town thus offers specific points of interest for culture, riverside scenery and wine-growing.

Château de Vayres and its gardens

Château de Vayres is listed as a historic monument; both the château and its gardens have been awarded the “Jardin remarquable” label. The privately owned château is open to the public. The gardens can be visited on a self-guided tour. The château also offers guided tours, special events and a puzzle trail in the park. This means visitors can choose between an independent garden tour and guided or scheduled activities. Access to the gardens may vary seasonally, and the visitor programme may change. Check visiting options and dates before your trip.

Mascaret and riverside scenery

Port de Saint-Pardon offers panoramic views of the river and is an especially good place to watch the Mascaret tidal bore. Vayres has two Mascaret waves a day, or about 730 a year, but only around 50 are considered noteworthy. The wave travels at 10 to 20 km/h and slows down in shallower water. It can reach a height of 1.36 metres, though its height is not constant. At high tidal coefficients, it attracts surfers and kayakers; many spectators watch and applaud the phenomenon, especially at Port de Saint-Pardon. Viewing conditions depend on the tides and river conditions. The harbour area is part of a Natura 2000 site that extends across part of the municipality of Vayres and protects plant and animal species.

Church and historical connection

The Église Saint Jean-Baptiste de Vayres now consists of three vaulted naves and a semicircular apse. Its three central choir windows depict Christ, Saint Peter and John the Baptist. The architecture and imagery offer different ways to explore the church: both the layout of the interior and the figures in the choir are clearly defined. In antiquity, a crossroad linked Port de Saint-Pardon with Vayres; the “Pierre debout” milestone survives along this route. It adds another historical point of interest alongside the religious architecture.

Wine-growing on the terraces

Wine-growing extends across the entire municipality of Vayres and the Plateau d’Arveyres, covering about 700 hectares. The vineyards lie on gravel or sandy-gravel terraces along the edge of the Dordogne. This makes the broader landscape a central feature of wine-growing, unlike the individual château or church. Visitors choosing Vayres by theme can thus distinguish between heritage, river activity and a wine-growing landscape that extends well beyond individual buildings.
