Tayac lies in the heart of the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux wine appellation. The vineyards around the village are surrounded by forests and ponds; wooded horizons also shape the landscape. Alongside this wine country, the Treasure of Tayac and the Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame de Tayac give the village a historical focus. A circular hiking route through Tayac, Francs and Saint-Cibard passes through villages and is associated with châteaux, churches and dovecotes. The landscape, local history and hiking route thus offer distinct perspectives for planning a trip. Near Tayac, a road also follows a wooded valley with dense undergrowth. This creates a different setting from the vineyards, forests and ponds around the village: here the valley and undergrowth shape the roadside landscape, while the surrounding wine country defines the area around the village.

The Treasure of Tayac

The Treasure of Tayac is a significant find from the La Tène period. It comprises 4 kg of gold, a torc and 400 Celtic coins. The treasure was discovered by farm workers in 1893. The period and the year of discovery refer to different historical aspects: the La Tène period dates the treasure, while 1893 marks its discovery. The treasure is on display at the Musée d’Aquitaine in Bordeaux. If you would like to see it there, check the current display before your visit. A torc is a neck ring, a piece of jewellery distinct from the coins also included in the treasure.

Church, Wine Country and Circular Hiking Route

Notre-Dame de Tayac is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. It stands at the entrance to the village on a hill overlooking wine country. Here you encounter two distinct aspects of history: an archaeological find from the La Tène period and a Romanesque building. The church was listed by decree on 21 December 1925; this later date complements, but does not replace, its construction period. The washhouse is also among the sights associated with Tayac.

The Tayac, Francs and Saint-Cibard circular hiking route starts and ends at Notre-Dame de Tayac. The church is thus both a 12th-century building and the starting and finishing point of the route. The trail passes through villages and is associated with châteaux, churches and dovecotes. Those interested in village and architectural history will find a specific way to explore these themes here. The vineyards, forests and ponds offer a separate perspective on the landscape around Tayac. This gives you two distinct focuses for planning your trip: the villages and their architectural heritage, or the wine country. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
