In Tabanac, travel highlights range from church history and historical accounts to wine tastings and hiking trails. Two distinctions are important when planning: visits to Château Renon are available on request, and Rando Tabanac’s club programme is organised by weekday and time format. The historical references, in turn, span very different periods.

Church History Across Several Periods

The parish church of Notre-Dame is Neo-Gothic, dates from the last quarter of the 19th century and was completed in 1874. A much older find is a marble sarcophagus from the 6th century, discovered in the cemetery. It was decorated in the so-called Aquitanian style and attests to the great age of the parish of Tabanac. The former Romanesque church of Sancta Maria de Tavanaco is recorded for 1398 in the register of Tabanac’s parishes. Thus, an early medieval find, a medieval entry in a register and a 19th-century church building stand alongside one another as distinct historical reference points.

According to a historical account, in 1140 the lords of Bouglon nailed horseshoes to the inside of the entrance to Notre-Dame de Tabanac after returning from a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The year belongs to this reported episode; it does not refer to the completion of the Neo-Gothic church. The Tour de Camail offers another historical perspective: it is probably dated to the 17th century, was long known as the Tour du Télégraphe and is very likely associated with the Chappe telegraph. Numerous Neolithic and Gallo-Roman remains are also among Tabanac’s historical traces. The town’s history therefore brings together different periods, from early remains to the history of buildings and traditions.

Wine Tastings at Château Renon

Château Renon offers wine tastings in Tabanac. Visits to the château and tastings of its organic wines are available on request. Commercial visitor offers may change; check current options before your trip. If a visit is important to your stay, take the request requirement into account when planning.

Hiking with Different Time Formats

Rando Tabanac offers classic hikes on Sunday mornings or for the whole day, at a pace of at least 4 km/h. In addition, a “rando cool” hike takes place every other Tuesday and is occasionally combined with visits. The programme may change; check current dates and participation details in advance.

The formats differ in their weekly schedule and time commitment: the classic offering includes a morning option and a full-day option, while “rando cool” takes place every other Tuesday and only occasionally includes visits. This makes it possible to choose based first on the time available and the format you prefer.

The Boucle Tabanac/Le Tourne is a hiking route between Tabanac and Le Tourne; along the Garonne, you can admire carrelets (traditional fishing huts) on the route. Unlike the club programme, the key points here are the connection between two places and the course of the river. Check the route details again before setting out.
