An earthen embankment in Saint-Selve bears witness to a road between Bordeaux, Dax and Toulouse. Other highlights include the legend of the Chemin Gallien, a 14 km circular hiking trail and the Parc du Domaine de Grenade, with its rhododendron forest. The town’s history, the trail and the park offer different ways to discover Saint-Selve: through old transport routes and legends, on foot across several types of landscape, or by exploring the park’s areas and interpretive features.

Chemin Gallien and heritage

In Saint-Selve, an earthen embankment bears witness to a road that connected Bordeaux (Burdigala) with Dax (Aquae Tarbellicae) and Toulouse (Tolosa); some accounts identify the embankment with the Chemin Gallien. The view of the embankment links a local landscape feature with a road whose destinations extend beyond the town.

A local legend is associated with the Chemin Gallien: the devil is said to have created the route overnight at the request of a desperate young man. Alongside the road’s history, the tale offers a different account of its origins and also roots the route in local tradition.

The Oratory of Notre-Dame de la Houn is another local heritage feature: experts date its sculpture to the 14th century. Following its patination on May 4, a facsimile of the sculpture was returned to its place the following month, according to a municipal update from 2026.

Hiking and parkland

The Boucle des Hounts is a 14 km circular hiking trail starting and ending in Saint-Selve. Forests, vineyards and meadows with horses shape the landscape along the route. The distance provides a clear measure for planning; check seasonal trail conditions and access separately before setting out.

The landscape park of the Parc du Domaine de Grenade covers 153 ha. A 40 ha rhododendron forest stretches across the grounds and is considered the largest in Europe. Visitors can discover hidden areas using 30 information boards or on a guided ride on the miniature train. The park includes lakes, an English-style river, the Étang des Charmes, a washhouse, stables and the château. Operating conditions may vary; check before your visit whether the guided ride is available.

Comparing the trail and the park can also help you choose how to spend the day: the Boucle is listed as a 14 km route, while the Parc du Domaine de Grenade is a 153 ha landscape park. The circular trail focuses on walking through forests, vineyards and meadows; in the park, you can choose between information boards and a guided miniature-train ride. The options therefore differ both in the type of visit and in their scale.
