Saint-Côme can be explored through two distinct themes: Lac de la Prade, with its protected natural areas, and Église Saint-Côme, with its long architectural history and an 18th-century painting. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore worth considering both nature and cultural heritage. The lake lies within the boundaries of the communes of Bazas, Saint-Côme and Gajac.

Lac de la Prade: a natural area with several forms of protection

Lac de la Prade is an artificial reservoir covering 51 hectares. It lies within a contiguous property covering 80 hectares. These figures refer to different areas: 51 hectares is the area of the lake, and 80 hectares is the area of the property within which it lies. Lac de la Prade was designated an Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) in 2019. The lake and its shores are also part of the Réseau hydrographique du Beuve Natura 2000 site.

Birds, orchids and visitor facilities

The protected bird sanctuary at Lac de la Prade is home to grey herons and great crested grebes; the visibility of these bird species varies by season. The lake’s slopes also have priority dry grassland habitats with orchids. This gives visitors two distinct natural features to look out for: the bird species mentioned in the sanctuary, and orchids in dry hillside habitats. A marked footpath and educational facilities make it easier to observe and learn about the species recorded there. Temporary environmental restrictions may affect access; check the conditions currently in force before your visit.

Fishing platforms and picnic tables are available by the lake, although temporary closures may affect their availability. In addition to observing nature, visitors can focus on fishing or taking a break at the picnic tables. From April to October, specialists and knowledgeable local enthusiasts offer free events at Lac de la Prade. Specific dates and content may vary. If you want to plan your visit around an event, check its date in advance.

The route from Bazas to the lake

The De Bazas au Lac de la Prade route first follows the Beuve for a stretch of about 1 km. It then continues along a path for several more kilometres to the lake. The approximately 1 km section is therefore not the same as the full route from Bazas to Lac de la Prade. At the lake, the route turns right, crosses a wooden bridge and climbs to an observation tower. The route is currently listed as temporarily closed. Before planning a hike, check whether it is accessible during your visit.

Church history and an 18th-century painting

Église Saint-Côme houses the 18th-century painting Saint Côme et saint Damien au pied de la croix. The work is listed as a protected movable cultural object; it was listed on 3 June 2005. The date of creation and the listing date therefore mark two different stages: the painting’s creation and its subsequent protected status.

The church itself also has a long and eventful history. It was damaged or destroyed multiple times—in the 10th century, during the Hundred Years’ War, in 1577 and during the Revolutionary period—and rebuilt or altered each time. The painting and the building’s history offer two tangible ways to explore Saint-Côme’s cultural heritage: a single work of art and the repeated changes to the church building.

When choosing when to travel, it is worth distinguishing between nature watching and events. The visibility of bird species varies seasonally; free events are offered from April to October, but their specific dates and content may change. If you are particularly interested in the birds, take their seasonal visibility into account. If you want to attend a particular event, check its date.
