Préchac reveals its character through distinctive architectural history and botanical diversity. In Pont de la Trave, the ruins of the Château de la Trave recall a medieval fortress; the Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens preserves structural elements from several building phases. The Parc Botanique des Landes Girondines offers a different perspective: an arboretum with deciduous and coniferous trees.
Château de la Trave on the Ciron
The protected Château de la Trave is located in Pont de la Trave in Préchac; its ruins stand on the banks of the Ciron. The imposing fortress was built around 1306 and destroyed at the end of the 16th century. The remains include ruins and underground structural remains. Its medieval construction, subsequent destruction and present state of preservation can thus be seen side by side. Its location by the Ciron adds a landscape perspective to its architectural history.
Churches and different building phases
The Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens in Préchac was classified as a historic monument by decree of 10 February 1909. The elements of the original building include remains and a transverse arch. The apse was probably built later; apsidal chapels and side aisles were added after that. The main eastern arch is probably Gothic, while the north aisle dates from the 19th century. The church thus preserves elements from several building phases, whose dating remains explicitly tentative in some cases.
The Église d’Insos was listed as a historic monument by decree of 24 December 1925. Visits to the Église Saint-Martin d’Insos must be arranged in advance. You can visit the church without a guide or as part of a guided tour. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm the arrangements before travelling.
Château Royal de Cazeneuve
The Château Royal de Cazeneuve stands in a park protected as a historic monument and overlooks the gorges of the Ciron. The sights on the tour include medieval cellars, troglodytic caves, Merovingian sarcophagi and a Gallo-Roman nymphaeum. These features range from underground spaces to historical and archaeological elements. The Château Royal de Cazeneuve also carries the Accueil Vélo cycle-friendly label.
Botanical diversity in Préchac
The Parc Botanique des Landes Girondines in Préchac is an arboretum. Various deciduous and coniferous tree species are planted across 12 to 15 hectares. The park includes around 180 oak taxa and a selection of trees from the genera Nyssa, Carya, Frexinus and Zelkova. With its planted area and variety of trees, it offers a different focus from the historic buildings: here, botanical diversity takes centre stage rather than architectural history.
The park can also be visited by appointment, either without a guide or with a guided tour. Confirm your appointment before your trip.
