In Mérignac, nature and cultural experiences can be planned around clearly distinct places: Parc du Château is a forest in the town centre, Bois du Burck has four orienteering courses, and Parc de Bourran is a biodiversity area. The picture is rounded out by the Vieille Église, whose history of construction dates back to the 12th century and which hosts fine art exhibitions. Depending on your interests, you can focus on forests, wildlife, or architectural and art history.

Forest and outdoor activities

Parc du Château covers 30 hectares of woodland in the centre of Mérignac. Maritime pines grow alongside deciduous trees, including old oaks; ferns, broom, gorse and heather add to the plant life. For nature enthusiasts, the focus is therefore not only on the woodland itself, but also on its variety of tree species and other vegetation. The former riding paths are regularly used by walkers and cyclists. Their former purpose and present-day use offer two perspectives on the site over time; if you plan to explore on foot or by bike, this use of the paths is a practical point of reference.

Bois du Burck covers 38 hectares, making it larger than the 30-hectare Parc du Château. Four orienteering courses run through the forest. While the former riding paths in Parc du Château are regularly used by walkers and cyclists, the orienteering courses in Bois du Burck offer a different focus for outdoor activities. Bois du Burck is open to everyone year-round; temporary municipal restrictions during periods of fire risk may affect access. It is also suitable for sports enthusiasts and families with young children.

Wildlife and historic monuments at Parc de Bourran

Wildlife takes centre stage at Parc de Bourran. This biodiversity area is home to protected European pond turtles, as well as mallards, greylag geese and Canada geese. While trees and plants define the character of Parc du Château, the natural focus at Bourran is on these animal species. The park was laid out around 1870; it is also listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. A visit here can therefore be viewed both in terms of biodiversity and historical context.

Architectural history and art

The Vieille Église de Mérignac was built in the 12th century and renovated in 2007. It was also awarded a Ruban du patrimoine. For 40 years, it has hosted fine art exhibitions; the programme changes over time. The site thus combines architectural history with a long-standing cultural use. If you are visiting specifically for an exhibition, check the current programme in advance.

Another cultural venue, the Médiathèque Michel Sainte-Marie has an auditorium with 118 seats. As the programme and access arrangements may change, if you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the current listings and access options in advance.
