A medieval cloister, a neoclassical parish church and paths alongside vineyard plots reveal different sides of Les Artigues-De-Lussac. There are also visits and wine tastings at a vineyard, available by appointment. Cultural history, church architecture and landscape thus provide concrete themes for planning a trip.
Abbey History and Maison d’écrivains
The Abbaye de Faise is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Les Artigues-De-Lussac. Cistercian monks from Cadouin Abbey founded it in the 12th century. Its role was to welcome pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela. The abbey’s historical role was therefore connected with welcoming travellers on a pilgrimage.
Maurice Druon acquired the abbey in 1972. Together with his wife Madeleine, he carried out an extensive restoration there that lasted almost ten years. A cloister and a gallery dating from the 12th century have survived; the ground floor houses the museum area of the Maison d’écrivains. The foundation, surviving architectural features and later restoration represent different periods in the abbey’s history.
Sacré-Cœur: Architecture and Features
The parish church of Sacré-Cœur complements the abbey’s history with neoclassical church architecture. Its design includes a long rectangular nave, a three-sided apse and a square bell tower. Inside, frescoes and stained-glass windows define the church’s features; both have been fully restored with the help of an association. The church’s layout and interior features can therefore be considered as two distinct aspects.
Paths Through the Landscape
Local walks pass alongside vineyard plots and a few small streams, and by various cultural landmarks. The walking route “Les Artigues de Lussac en toute tranquillité” goes around the Abbaye Notre-Dame-de-Faise. A separate 15 km circular route is dedicated to the commune. The named walking route goes around the Abbaye Notre-Dame-de-Faise; the separate circular route is 15 km long and dedicated to the commune. Check the condition of the circular route locally before including it in your plans.
The Libournais From the Air
The “Vols en autogire” offer a different perspective, allowing you to explore the Libournais from the air. You may see châteaux, vineyards, forests, gravel pits and rivers. Flying with dual controls is also possible. The experiences offer different scales: local walks pass along vineyard plots and streams, while a flight reveals the Libournais from the air.
Wine Tastings by Appointment
Château Croix de Rambeau offers vineyard visits and wine tastings by appointment. Bear this condition in mind when planning a visit. Together with the cultural landmarks and walking routes, this offers a choice of different interests without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Les Artigues-De-Lussac, you can tailor your stay to specific interests: abbey history and church architecture, local paths, wine tastings by appointment or a view of the Libournais from the air.
