Visitors to Haux can plan their stay around a range of different themes: underground wine cellars, dated crosses, viewpoints and hiking trails, as well as a cycling route that passes through the village. Two practical details are particularly useful for planning: cellar tours take place daily but require advance booking; the Boucle vélo n°16 Créon Sud is 21 km long and takes cyclists to the church in the old village centre. This lets you decide whether wine, local history or outdoor activities should be the focus of your trip.
Wine cellars and limestone quarries
At Château Lamothe de Haux, guided tours of the underground wine cellars are offered daily by prior reservation. The tour is followed by a tasting of the estate’s wines and cocktails. The visit therefore follows a clear sequence: an introduction to the cellars, followed by a tasting. If you are interested in both, you can plan the tour and tasting as one visit.
Beneath the Château Lamothe de Haux estate are 8 km of limestone quarries, excavated in the 17th century. The extent of the quarries and the period in which they were created add another historical dimension to the estate alongside its wine.
Crosses and church: traces of Haux through time
At the southern entrance to the Grand chemin stands the Croix de Manos; in 1769, it bore a wooden cross. The Croix de Bergueil stands at the other end of the hamlet and is dated 1864. The two dates are 95 years apart: together with their different locations, the crosses provide historical and geographical reference points for the village.
The portal and the entire west façade of the church in Haux were entered by decree dated 21 November 1925 and classified as historic monuments in France on 13 October 1953. To visit the church, contact Haux Town Hall on 05 56 23 95 22; check the arrangements for visits with them directly before your arrival.
On foot and by bike
Haux has numerous viewpoints and hiking trails. If you would like to focus more on spending time outdoors, you can make hiking a central part of your stay. One specifically named cycling route is the 21 km Boucle vélo n°16 Créon Sud. It passes through Haux and directs cyclists to the church in the old village centre. If you plan to follow the route, check the route conditions before setting off.
Annual cultural events
The Omelette géante takes place in Haux every year on Easter Monday and attracts visitors and participants from outside the municipality as well. The Easter date provides a fixed point for trip planning; check the date for the year of your trip if you would like to plan your stay around this event.
A theatre group in Haux performs a comedy for all age groups every year. Alongside the Easter Monday event, the programme also includes annual theatre performances for audiences of all ages. The two events offer different planning options: one is tied to a specific day on the calendar, while the other is a comedy expressly intended for all age groups.
