Eyrans brings together two distinctly different landscapes within its municipal area: a plateau and marshland. The plateau is entirely shaped by wine growing, while pastureland defines the character of the marshland. In front of the marshland lies a transition zone, used for growing grain and vegetables and irrigated by the Moulinade. This contrast is useful when choosing where to visit: Eyrans is associated not only with wine growing, but also with pastureland and the agriculturally used transition zone.

Marais de la Vergne: natural area and wildlife

The Marais de la Vergne is a type 1 ZNIEFF natural area that also includes the municipality of Eyrans. It is of great ecological importance and has a rich flora typical of lowland marshes. Herons find food here and potentially also opportunities to breed; numerous marsh songbirds and birds of prey find food and breeding opportunities. The marsh is also home to a population of European mink. The area’s natural environment can therefore be recognised both by its characteristic lowland marsh flora and by the groups of birds and mammals found there.

Cycle path and walking trails

The Blaye–Etauliers cycle path passes through Eyrans. It is 14 kilometres long, takes about an hour by bike and is rated easy. The route follows a former railway line and passes through the vineyards of Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux. Its length, approximate duration and rating answer different planning questions: they give you an idea of the distance, time required and level of difficulty. The one-hour duration is an estimate; check it again if you are planning a tour to a precise schedule. The route along the former railway line and through the vineyards also combines a historical connection with today’s landscape. Local hiking trails also pass through the municipality, offering another way to experience Eyrans on foot.

Église Saint-Pierre: pilgrimage connection and building history

The Église Saint-Pierre d’Eyrans lies along one of the routes leading to Santiago de Compostela. The original layout has been preserved; the church has been altered several times since the 12th century. Extensions were added at the end of the 17th century and in the 19th century. The church also houses a 17th-century marble depiction of the Virgin and Child, which came from the former hospital village. Its connection to pilgrimage, preserved layout and later building phases offer visitors several points of historical interest. Visits are free by appointment. Please arrange your visit in advance, as appointment requirements may change.
