In Baron, the layered architectural history of the Église Saint-Christophe, historic châteaux and two cycling routes with different focuses come together. There is also a winery that offers tours with tastings. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the historic buildings, the winery tour, which is available by appointment only, and the routes through the village and vineyards.

Église Saint-Christophe and the History of the Crypt

The Église Saint-Christophe reflects building phases spanning several centuries. Its chancel was built above a partly subterranean crypt. Parts of the church date from the 11th century; it was altered in the early 12th century. There are also 16th-century paintings of the Evangelists. The nave and west façade were rebuilt in the 19th century. The church therefore cannot be assigned to a single period: its surviving architectural features and alterations span the Middle Ages through to the modern era.

The crypt was historically associated with a pilgrimage intended to cure fear in children, known as “La Peur de Baron.” The pilgrimage took place on 25 July, the feast day of Saint Christopher. It ended in 1726 following a royal decree. Its date and end are part of its history; this does not mean that it is a current event.

Cycling Routes with Different Highlights

The 16-kilometre, easy Circuit des Seigneurs cycle route passes through the village of Baron and offers a chance to experience the region’s architectural heritage. Along the route, Château Paimpoix-Laffite can be seen from the roadside. The estate was built in the 16th century and remodelled around a central courtyard up to the 19th century. It is private and cannot be visited; the view from the route is the only way to see it.

The Boucle vélo n°17 Baron has a different focus: it starts in the car park beside the Église Saint-Christophe de Baron and runs through the region’s countryside and vineyards. The two routes thus offer different ways to discover Baron and its architectural heritage by bike: the Circuit des Seigneurs passes through the village, while the Boucle vélo n°17 starts at the church and takes in the landscape and vineyards.

Châteaux, Winemaking and Architecture

The Château de Crain estate covers almost 100 hectares: 45 hectares of vineyards, 20 hectares of arable land, 20 hectares of woodland, and 15 hectares of meadows, fallow land, parks and gardens. Its buildings also tell different stories: a rear section dating from the 14th century has been preserved, while the front façade was built in the medieval style in the 19th century. Anyone wishing to tour the winery and enjoy a tasting must make an appointment before each visit. Tours with tastings in the historic cellars are offered daily.

At Château Bellefontaine, buildings near the Souloire stream are grouped around a large courtyard. They were built or remodelled between the 16th and 19th centuries. Together with the building phases of Château Paimpoix-Laffite and Château de Crain, this offers a tangible comparison: the estates bring together different centuries, while their respective layouts have their own architectural features.

Dining in Baron

Le Baron Gourmand serves hearty traditional cuisine made with fresh ingredients. The menu includes dishes grilled over a wood fire, fish dishes and homemade desserts. This adds a local dining option to the historic and landscape highlights, without requiring a visit to a tour or cycling route.
