Avensan can be explored through several distinct highlights: an extensive pine forest, lakes with a range of leisure activities, and historical and cultural landmarks. The forest consists mainly of pine trees and covers around 650 hectares, stretching from Saint-Raphaël in the south to the hamlet of Garenne. There are also activities for families, as well as tours and tastings. When planning your stay, it is worth choosing based on the interests you want to focus on—nature, heritage, or experiences involving wine and local activities.

Lakes and trails with different features

Les Étangs d’Avensan has four walking trails. Paths along the shores of the individual lakes connect them to the other lakes. If you want to choose a specific route, Lac Jaugas has a 2-kilometre circuit, a fitness trail and a picnic area. At Lac de Laudéré, there is a 2.6-kilometre walking trail with a shaded section through the forest. The two distances and the trails’ different features offer practical points of reference when choosing a route.

At Lac de Bronturon, there is an area reserved for anglers and a birdwatching observatory. There is also a 1.3-kilometre walk through an area with rich biodiversity. If you are looking for water sports rather than a walk, Lac Casalié has facilities for activities such as water skiing and wakeboarding. Avensan therefore offers short walks with stated distances as well as activities on the water; the choice depends on the kind of outing you want to focus on.

Romanesque church and historic sites

The Église Saint Pierre is a Romanesque church and has been listed as a historic monument since 1915. Inside are several alabaster reliefs donated by Pey Berland to his home parish. They depict his patron saints and the scene of his ordination as a bishop in Rome. The church’s architecture is thus linked to the story of a figure who later became prominent. A visit to the site can also include a closer look at the details of the reliefs.

The Chapelle de Saint Raphaël is associated both with an annual pilgrimage and with the story of Pey Berland: he is said to have been born there in 1375 and later became Archbishop of Bordeaux. If the pilgrimage is relevant to your travel plans, check the date in advance. La croix de Villeranque is also a protected historic site; the monument stands at the edge of the route of the ancient Levade on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The history of Château Meyre dates back to the 17th century and adds to these historical landmarks.

Family activities, wine and farm visits

Alice au pays des paons is aimed at families and combines stories, workshops and tastings in wine-and-culture experiences. Another activity is Cache-cache en Médoc: this family treasure hunt in Avensan can be played on foot, by bike or by car around the commune. The two activities differ in format—one combines stories and workshops with tastings, while the other is set up as a search around the commune.

At Château Citran, the offerings include guided tours followed by commentary-led wine tastings. Ferme de Vertessec welcomes visitors for tours of its poultry farm, but only by appointment and depending on the season. For this farm visit, you should therefore take both the appointment requirement and the seasonal condition into account. Together, the tours and activities offer different ways to discover Avensan beyond its forest, trails and heritage, through wine, agriculture and family activities.
