Ambès offers several different ways to plan your trip: the Château de Sainte-Barbe showcases architectural history, Parc de Cantefrêne is a park landscape shaped by ponds, and Espace des 2 Rives hosts cultural events throughout the year. There is also a walking trail, an annual open-air festival and municipal leisure facilities. You can tailor your stay to your interests in architecture, time outdoors or a cultural event.
Parkland and protected area
Parc de Cantefrêne covers 65 hectares and was created by successfully transforming a former gravel pit. Three ponds shape the park. Its creation links today's parkland with the site's former use as a gravel pit—a tangible part of the area's history.
Another connection with nature is the Natura 2000 site “marais du Bec d’Ambès”. It is designated as a Special Area of Conservation under code FR 7200686 and extends partly across the municipality of Ambès.
Walking trail and activities at Parc de Cantefrêne
The “Balade à roulettes: Le parc de Cantefrêne” route starts in Ambès, is four kilometres long and is rated very easy. Visitors can choose between circular routes around one, two or three lakes. The number of lakes included offers a clear point of comparison, while the route's length and difficulty give you an idea of what to expect.
Parc de Cantefrêne also has a minigolf course and a cycle path. Together with the routes around the lakes, these offer different ways to enjoy the park: on foot, by bike or playing minigolf. Which option appeals to you depends on the kind of leisure activity you'd like to include in your stay.
The Château de Sainte-Barbe and local architectural history
The Château de Sainte-Barbe is an 18th-century manor house built between 1760 and 1770. It is representative of buildings commissioned by Bordeaux dignitaries on the banks of the Garonne. The château has been protected as a historic monument since 1996. Its specific construction dates and broader architectural context give the manor house a clear place in the region's history.
The history of the present-day church also reaches back to an earlier building phase: remains of an old chapel, possibly Romanesque, called Notre-Dame d’Ambès were found during its construction. The chapel was probably replaced around 1766 by another building with a bell gable, triangular pediment and cross. Its Romanesque origins are therefore possible, while the date of the replacement building is an estimate.
Cultural events and festival
Espace des 2 Rives on Rue Montesquieu is an event venue that hosts a range of cultural events throughout the year. The programme includes performances, exhibitions, dinner shows and other cultural gatherings. The programme is therefore not limited to a single annual event.
Les Odyssées is a free, multidisciplinary open-air family festival held every year in Ambès. It celebrates street arts and contemporary music. This distinguishes two different timescales: year-round events at Espace des 2 Rives and the annual festival. If Les Odyssées is a deciding factor in your trip, check the dates for that year's edition in advance.
Swimming pool and other leisure activities
The Caneton d’Ambès municipal swimming pool has a 25-metre-long, 10-metre-wide pool with four lanes. Along with the minigolf course and cycle path at Parc de Cantefrêne, it adds a clearly defined swimming option to the range of leisure activities in Ambès.
