A medieval defensive cave, Romanesque-Gothic church architecture and a 14-kilometre circular trail offer different themes for a stay in Vanxains. When planning, you can focus on architectural history, the historical interpretation of the village or hiking; each has a specific point of interest here.
Church architecture and seasonal tours
Notre-Dame de la Nativité was built at the end of the 11th century and consecrated in 1147. Romanesque and Gothic elements shape the building. Its architectural features include a nave with three bays, sculpted capitals and a barrel vault, as well as a richly sculpted choir, a dome on pendentives and a staircase running inside a pier. These features range from the layout of the church interior to individual decorative and structural details—a focus for travellers interested in architectural history. Guided tours were scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon in July and August. Before your trip, check whether these seasonal tours are currently taking place.
Châteaux and historical traces
The Château de La Brangélie was rebuilt but still retains two towers from the 13th century. The Château Trompette was built in the 19th century by the de Laage family on the site of an older farmhouse. The rectangular building has three towers with different designs: to the northwest is a round tower with a conical slate roof; to the northeast is a square tower with a hipped roof of Flemish tiles. Another square tower stands in the middle of the south façade and has a low-pitched tiled roof. At Trompette, the cardinal directions and roof shapes help distinguish the towers; La Brangélie is identified by its surviving medieval towers.
The Cluzeau de Vanxains is a man-made medieval defensive cave with several rooms. Protected by masses of scree, it remained practically intact. The “Arrêt sur Village – Vanxains” walk offers another way to explore local history: it reveals Vanxains through traces of its Celtic past and evidence of its former status as an archpriesthood of the Double in the 14th century. At the Cluzeau, the architectural form of a defensive cave takes centre stage; the walk places historical traces from different periods in context.
Landscape and hiking
Vanxains lies on the edge of the Double. In the municipal Natura 2000 information from May 2018, the area of natural habitats of European interest in the section of the Vallée de la Dronne Natura 2000 site near Vanxains is given as 14.8 hectares. One specific hiking suggestion is the Boucle de Vanxains: this 14 km circular trail is rated as moderately difficult and starts at Place de la Mairie in Vanxains. Its length, difficulty rating and starting point give you a clear basis for planning the hike as a standalone activity.
