Tocane-Saint-Apre can be explored through its architectural history as well as routes that connect history and landscape. For your trip, you can first decide whether you are more interested in churches and manor houses, a museum collection, or a walking or cycling tour. Options range from a one-hour garden stroll to a 29.1-kilometre circular route, each offering a different focus.

Churches, Castles and Architectural History

The Église Notre-Dame de la Nativité is a 19th-century Neo-Gothic Romanesque church. Its floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross. The two-bay nave is divided into two sections; it is complemented by a transept, a barrel-vaulted choir and a semicircular apse. This makes it possible to describe the architecture through its individual components rather than viewing it only as a single church interior.

Several eras meet at the Château de Fayolle: the château was built in 1766 on the foundations of a medieval structure. The English gardens were designed by the Bülher brothers; a walk through them takes one hour. Tours of the rooms are available and are led by the Fayolle family’s majordomo. The Château is listed as a historic monument (ISMH). It opened to the public after its acquisition in 2024.

The Château de Beauséjour represents a different type of architecture: it is a fortified manor house dating from the 15th or 16th century, with a chapel added to the estate in 1607. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Perdux, meanwhile, was built on the banks of the Dronne in 1890, after a pilgrimage dedicated to Notre-Dame de l’Assomption had been revived. The Manoir de Lavalade also brings together several periods: the manor house dates from the 16th and 18th centuries and is first mentioned in 1323. The ruins of the Château de Vernode include a keep that has been classified as a historic monument since 1886.

Mill and Costume Collection

The Moulin de Salles in Tocane-Saint-Apre is a grain and oil mill, specifically a walnut oil mill. The Hôtel Paradol is a 15th-century building and currently houses a costume museum. The Musée du costume et de l’artisanat au 19eme siècle displays traditional clothing, caps and shawls. Its textiles include hemp, silk, cashmere, wool and cotton; lace and handmade embroidery are also part of the collection. The cultural focus thus ranges from historic buildings to materials and textile crafts.

Getting Around on Foot or by Bike

The family-friendly Terra Aventura: Balade en Tocane route is four kilometres long and offers a geocaching experience on foot. It introduces the history and monuments of Tocane-Saint-Apre and features the Dronne as its highlight. A longer circular route is the Boucle de Tocane Saint-Apre – Les Tours de Vernode: it starts in Tocane-Saint-Apre, covers 11.8 kilometres and is rated easy. It is intended for hikers and mountain bikers and combines historical and nature-focused highlights.

The Circuit au Fil de la Dronne also starts in Tocane-Saint-Apre. It is an easy circular route for trekking and road bikes, covering 29.1 kilometres with 920 metres of elevation gain. The stated duration is two hours. The route climbs the slopes, then descends into the valley and follows the Dronne and its mills. By comparison, the 11.8-kilometre loop offers a different distance and a choice between hiking and mountain biking; the four-kilometre Terra Aventura route focuses on geocaching and monuments. The routes can therefore be distinguished by your preferred mode of transport, interests and timeframe.

This focus can help you choose a hotel: architectural history and the collection, a stroll through the gardens or one of the routes each take up different parts of your trip. Planning therefore starts with the question of what you would most like to experience in Tocane-Saint-Apre.
